Jobless Recovery: A Contradiction in Terms

Using Language to Make the Bizarre Sound Reasonable

David A. Reinstein, LCSW
Oxymoron abundus.
Even the ancients would have known
That if economic recovery were real,
Real results could be easily shown
To the people who have suffered
At the hands of unbridled greed
And have had their lives reduced
To bare survival need.

The banks may be recovering -
Some popular Ponzi schemes as well.
Wall Street says it's getting better.
(How do those people live with
Their own smell?)
Real estate is selling at prices a decade old
Because something listed at its fair price
Will not likely wind up getting sold.

The story is an old one but remains as true today
As it was two hundred years ago
When the Founding Fathers crafted a way
To create a society built upon ideals
That sounded both humane and fair -
But which, in the clarity that hindsight brings,
Couldn't cause the rich to care
About the 'have-nots' in the world
Who had nothing to invest
And had to accept the best they could afford
Rather than choose the choicest to ingest.

All were not regarded equally
Unless they held land and slaves,
Whose hands and hearts never touched the fecally
Infested fields of paupers' graves.
But the powers that be can still spin words
That make things sound OK
To the factory worker with no job
Or the trained teacher with no pay.
Jobless Recovery
Is the kind of creation
That showcases language at its worse.
It's simply a grain-of-rice ration
Of hope for those still victimized
By the unregulated hoards
Of selfishly drive avarice
Confusing reality with mere words.

Another good peotic editorial. Here's another oxymoron: AC publishing! It's hard to keep up when AC isn't sending emails!

    Brilliant! and sadly accurate.

Jobless recovery... That's like moneyless spending, isn't it? Funny poem.

You hit it on this one, David. It's a pity that the email notifications aren't going out - I had to hit this off your Profile page. Cheers (and fingers crossed that it gets fixed and soon!)
