One employment opportunity is in retail sales. To get a job of this sort you have to be a people person with a great attitude. This job calls for you to great the public all day long. Your energy level has to be at an all time high because chances are you will be walking and talking all day long. Some people won't be able to stand the rigors of standing all day long.
Flexibility
You have to be flexible because retail may call for you to change your hours occasionally. Sometimes you will come to work in the morning and other times in the evening. Most of the time retail hours are late hours. If you like to sleep in then this is a great opportunity for you. If you just want a set schedule with no variation or changes then retail may not be for you. There are a lot of people that just want to work from 9 to 5.
Pay
The pay scale in retail is not the best. Some jobs give you the opportunity to earn commission in addition to your hourly wage.
Interest
With retail the job can be seasonal. Depending on the industry you can have some really slow periods if there is not a sale or it's not the holiday season. You have to keep busy during those periods. Sometimes you have to find something to keep your interest up.
Sales
To get a job in retail you have to have good sales skills. You have to be a person of influence. Good product knowledge is essential to your success. If a customer has a sense that you do not know what you are talking about they will leave the store without making a purchase. Consumers like speaking with sales people who are confident, courteous, knowledgeable, friendly, and have a great attitude along with a great personality. Most sales people are able to maintain these characteristics throughout the day even when things are going bad or if they don't get a sale. When people enter a store for the most part they are ready to purchase it's up to the sales person to close the sale.
