1. Preacher. When times are tough and the end seems near people become more spiritual and begin to look for answers from the solid form of a human. You need to lead with a positive outlook for their future now or in the here after so they will continue to try. You provide hope, help and services in any form you can to those around you. You will work for donations only and maybe a place to live during your work. It may not seem like much of a way of life to many, but when you have nothing you will be happy for a warm place to live and food to eat.
2. Room rentals. Yes, it does sound like the boarding house of the old west and maybe it is, but it will help you survive day to day. If you are one of the lucky one's to have a home you can move just yourself if you are alone or your family to one or two rooms at the back of the house. Close off a portion of the living room to add another room and set up a bed or pallet to rent to those who have nothing. For a further fee you can provide a meal of breakfast or dinner and service such as laundry, cleaning and entertainment. Each chore will have a set fee. Don't over charge, but don't give away your services. You are trying to run a businesses in a survival economy.
3. Budget expert. If you are good with basic numbers and can help people then set up a small area in your home leaning to live on a budget and figure out conditions to suit their income or lack there of. You will provide the numbers in a way they make sense and keep a list of others with problems to be traded for services needed. If you have someone in need of a place to live for a short while with little or no income you can match them to a customer in need of help for home repairs or just a little more cash for the short term. You will help to budget, provide solutions and listen to someone that just needs to talk.
4. Meat for the dinner table butcher. Anyone can raise rabbit and chickens for food, but many people cannot kill and butcher them when the time comes. This is where you find your job. If you are used to the idea of game meat, hunting or can acquire the butchering skill without emotional breakdown you can provide the service for a fee or trade. This will keep food on your own table and money in your pocket. You can raise rabbits to butcher for those who do not have a flock or a place to keep them and also provide instructions on raising small animals for meat and provide a start with a few small rabbit pairs. Be careful because rabbits can breed and produce quickly. Don't become over run with too many.
5. Backyard farmer. It sounds simple, but many people do not have the time, knowledge or skill to raise a garden for enough food for the family. You can become the community backyard farmer. You will raise the food in your own backyard but also contract to create and care for backyard farms in the neighborhood. You can do this for a portion of the crop and cash. When you collect your portion of the crop at harvest you can open a stand for the end of the season at a farmers market or donate to those without.
6. Garage sale consignment. Be the person in the neighborhood to collect a little from everyone and have one garage sale anyone can attend. Keep good records of what belongs to whom and how much it sales for. After each sale you receive 10% to 25% of all cash. This will help others that do not have the time or talent to run a garage sale business.
Now the ground has been laid for the very hard times. There are many other idea's for tough times, but this will help any community come together as one to help each other and to help their own with disabilities and the poor. Take the time to plan what you could do even if it never happens. It never hurts to prepare for a different future.
