Before you start looking for job fairs, make sure you do and bring these essentials:
1) Try to figure out which companies will be going to the job fair or your choice. An easy way to do this is to email the job fair site or calling the local number.
a. Do research on the companies that interest you
i. Employers love to see potential employees who know the basic information and history of their company.
2) Polish up your resume.
a. Check for typos and spelling errors.
b. Update job experience, phone numbers, addresses.
c. Bring extra copies to hand out to potential employers
3) Dress nicely
a. Make sure you are dressed to impress.
b. Men should try to wear conservative shirts, ties, and shoes.
c. Women should try to wear conservative shirts, skirts, or pants, as well as shoes.
d. If possible, remove all piercings, such as nose, lip, or extra ear piercings.
4) Other optional things to bring:
a. A stack of business cards.
b. Career portfolio of your accomplishments.
c. A personal business card with your home and cell number, as well as email and address. These can be made a Kinko's or Office Mac.
d. Pen and paper
i. This shows companies that you are eager and excited to learn about their company.
Do's and Don'ts of Job Fairs, Expos.
1) Don't take too many of the free goodies such as pens, magnets, and cups. Be discreet.
2) Do take business cards or pamphlets.
3) Do ask questions about each company. Show your interest.
4) Don't overstay your welcome. You want to be able to get to as many different companies as possible.
5) Do ask about the next step as far as the hiring process.
6) Do network, not just with the companies, but with other people who are looking for jobs, and other career professionals.
