Jodie Sweetin Triumphs with Second Pregnancy and Book Success

How a Child Star Gone Bad Transformed Herself

Robin Raven
The Full House Years

Most of us children of the 1980's fell in love with "Full House." It showed that families who were different could still be very happy, and that a hug and 23 minutes could solve any problem a kid could have. Jodie Sweetin was a precocious and precious child star as Stephanie Tanner, the middle child of the show.

When "Full House" was first on, I fell between the ages of DJ and Stephanie, falling closer to Stephanie's age, and I related to her character, like most young girls of my generation. In the late 1980's and early 1990's, I remember reading a feature story on Jodie in "Barbie Magazine" and seeing interviews of her on Nickelodeon and thinking what a cool person she was. In real life, Jodie Sweetin didn't feel as popular and adored as she was all over the world when it came to school life. She always longed to fit in. While I never imaged that Jodie was taunted as I was in my school in Alabama, Jodie revealed in her biography, cleverly titled "Unsweetined," that she struggled with just such things as a child star who also attended regular school and aspired to be normal.

When the Full House Emptied

After "Full House" ended when Jodie was entering her teen years, Jodie downward spiraled early on. Having her first drink (and several that night) at "Full House" co-star Candace Cameron Bure's wedding, Jodie descended into an alcohol and drug addiction over the next several years. She even ended up leaving college as a consequence of the addiction and spent much of her "Full House" funds on both drugs and friends that would leave when the drugs dried up. In a story that could turn as tragic as many other child star lives, Jodie was able to pull herself up from the depths of the addiction.

Overcoming Addiction

After several bouts and attempts to get sober, Jodie Sweetin was able to finally overcome her addiction not long after the birth of her daughter, Zoie, who she had with her ex, Cody Herpin. After driving after drinking and having Zoie in the car, she had a wake-up call. She revealed the truth of her addiction and mistakes in her brave, raw and fearless autobiography, "Unsweetined." Cody Herpin's mistreatment of Jodie Sweetin was also detailed.

Motherhood Twice for Jodie Sweetin

Perhaps the most touching part of Jodie's book was her love letter to her daughter, Zoie. In bravely admitting her mistakes to the world, she knows that they may fall into the hands of her own daughter. She dedicates the book and the touching letter to her daughter, letting her know how much she is loved and how much she wants for her loved daughter.

Happily, Jodie Sweetin is also about to become a mother for the second time. She is expecting a baby with her love, Morty Coyle, who she has been seeing for a year. Jodie's due later this year. Her rep Stella Alex confirmed the news to E! News. She stated, "Yes, Jodie is expecting, she is absolutely fantastic, happy and all is well."

For now, Jodie Sweetin is enjoying time with her daughter. She often tweets of the time they spend together, such as time spent watching "Shrek" over and over again, or watching her daughter play with her stove set.

Thanks so much for the comment, Renee. I recommend the book if you also grew up with "Full House" or are interested in a really frank book on the quest for recovery. :) I still love "Full House." ;-)

Interesting. I have been thinking of reading her, and I didn't realize she was pregnant again. Good article.
