Joe Biden Olympics Interview: He Jokes, "We're Hoping for Another Snowstorm in Washington"

Roy A. Barnes
Vice President Joe Biden said during a 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremonies interview Friday with NBC's Lester Holt, "We're hoping for another snowstorm in Washington so we can't get back." Joe Biden may have put his foot in his mouth again, this time over Snowmageddon, while at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Joe Biden said this in response to Holt's Olympics interview question about what events he and his wife would take in while in Vancouver, as he initially was mentioning various events they'd like to see, but apparently wouldn't have enough time to take in all of them. While the Vice President made these comments in jest, his past penchant for sticking his foot in his mouth makes his remarks about the mid-Atlantic Snowmageddon kind of questionable, if not for its timing.

Joe Biden Olympics Interview: What will the Fallout be for the Vice President, if any, Regarding His Snowmageddon Remarks?

Washington, D.C. has suffered a massive onslaught of snow, and this has caused the federal government to be shut down for days, as well as massive airline delays and cancellations at the nation's capital's airports. Knowing these things have happened, it would seem that Vice President Joe Biden would choose his words more carefully, even though he was merely joking about "hoping for another snowstorm in Washington" in light of all the inconvenience and hardship this Snowmageddon has caused the population this month, not just in the D.C. area, but all over the mid-Atlantic USA.

I listen to the man, and I think to myself that he really is constantly trying to be friendly and engaging, but either his timing or his words seem to be verbal disasters waiting to happen at any interview or speech he participates in, including at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. I wonder how many people are joking about the mid-Atlantic USA Snowmageddon this year? How many people are laughing as they try to get to work or to the market for groceries in that mess? Even Lester Holt reacted to the comments from the Joe Biden Olympics interview by saying, "They won't want you back if you make that kind of wish."

This could mean some extra shoveling of the White House sidewalks for the Vice President, you think? Possibly plowing out the parking lots around town, too?
