Joe Lieberman Must Go??!?!?!

Protests Getting Louder

After an embattled 2008 Presidential Campaign, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman might just find himself a casualty of political wars. Mr. Lieberman who was a very vocal supporter of Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain seems to be fighting for his future as liberal and conservative Democrats lobby to have him removed from his current ranks in the 110th Senate Democratic Caucus. Although Lieberman ran for President as a Democrat in 2004 and later alongside Democratic Presidential Candidate Al Gore in 2006 as VP, he broke ranks during the recent 2008 campaign and openly supported John McCain. The reason behind his staunch support of McCain many say is because he was hoping for the VP job later granted to Sarah Palin.

With the drums beating louder everyday, news reports - say that President-Elect Obama is continually preaching reconciliation and would not want his transition period to be distracted by infighting among Democrats over Lieberman's future. According to an online petition being circulated - those supporting the Lieberman ouster say that "He (Lieberman) should not be allowed to have subpoena power to investigate the Obama administration as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. In fact, he should not be allowed to remain chairman of this or any other committee." Mr. Lieberman was the first Jewish-American candidate on a major presidential party ticket.

Lieberman lost his bid for Senate re-election in 2006 in the Democratic primaries but won in the general election as a third party candidate under the label of "Independent Democrat." So after a stinging loss for the GOP with McCain-Palin, Lieberman returned home to a well publicized meeting on November 5th, 2008 with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Many say that during that meeting Lieberman began talks about his future role in the Democratic Party. To date, Lieberman continues to vote Democrat but published information indicates that since his speech at the 2008 Republican Convention endorsing John McCain for President, Lieberman no longer attends Democratic Senate Caucus leadership strategy meetings or policy lunches.

So, in a Democracy where freedom of speech is one of our key tenets, should Lieberman be censored or ousted by the Democrats because he made a choice to break ranks?

Well, according to the folks who want to drive him out; "Lieberman has proven he cannot be trusted to hold a high rank within the Democratic caucus." With that in mind, they launched Lieberman Must Go last summer, a campaign that got Congress' attention with a petition containing over 43,000 signatures. With January 20th, 2009 only weeks away they are working to escalate the pressure - and asking that the Senators and members of the Senate Democratic Steering Committe - strip Lieberman of his chairmanship in the Democratic caucus.

He isn't quite Benedict Arnold, but he is a turncoat, nonetheless.
