Joe Mauer Contract with Minnesota Twins Rumored to Be a 10-Year Contract Extension
The Minnesota Twins Catcher Also Won the 2009 MVP and Gold Glove at Catcher
Joe Mauer has one year left on his current contract, which will pay him $12.5 million for the 2010 MLB season. He is currently only 27 years old, so he could potentially have some extremely good years in front of him, leading the Twins to really see the value in signing him long-term. He is now the cornerstone of the Minnesota Twins franchise, and in order to not only keep him happy, but the fans as well, they need to offer Mauer a very good deal. Last season Joe Mauer started out the season on the disabled list due to injury, but still game back with enough vigor to win him the 2009 American League Most Valuable Player Award. It was a spectacular season for Mauer in the end, and one that could have garnered him a huge new deal.
In the 2009 MLB season, Joe Mauer hit .365 with a .444 on base percentage, 28 home runs, and 96 RBI in only 138 games. He is heading into his prime years now, and looks to even further improve upon his great numbers. In addition to winning the AL MVP, Mauer also took home the 2009 Gold Glove, and cemented himself as the best catcher in baseball. All of this is a huge reason to get Joe Mauer signed to a long-term deal, and if you couple it with his great clubhouse persona, you can see why the Twins want to make sure he is around for many years to come. We will make sure to update if we find out that the deal is made official, but right now the rumors is 10 years for around $200 million in an extension.
