JOEY CHESTNUT WINS THE BIG ONE FOR AMERICA
"
This could be the greatest moment in American sports history". This was a quote from one of the commentators during ESPN's broadcast of the annual 4th of July Nathan's hot dog eating contest held on Wednesday. While that comment can only be seen as a huge exaggeration of the truth, some of the statement does stand true in light of the fact that America needs all the shining examples of triumph it can muster right now.

By beating the hugely challenging Japanese eating phenomenon known as Takeru Kobayashi, Joey Chestnut has brought home to America the #1 ranking in the field of hot dog eating, which is of course an American food classic known all over the world. Kobayahi has actually won this competition six times in the past six years, so his defeat is no laughing matter when it comes to food eating contests.

CONEY ISLAND CROWD GOES NUTS!
As Joey Chestnut finished off the last of his 66 Nathan's hot dogs that beat Kobayashi's hot dog consumption of 63 of the famous wieners and buns, the New York spectators went absolutely ballistic as they realized that Chestnut would finally achieve this awesome victory for the USA. Chestnut actually beat his own world record when he consumed all 66 hot dogs in a short 12 minutes, which translates into eating one hot dog every 10.9 seconds.

The 23 year-old Californian native stated that he could actually eat another hot dog if the mood struck him the right way even after the mass hot dog consumption had taken place. Kobayashi had stayed very close to Joey Chestnut in eating his share of hot dogs even after undergoing a painful wisdom tooth extraction and treatment to his jaw bone after experiencing some soreness there.

A REVERSAL OF FORTUNE OCCURS IN THE KOBAYASHI CAMP
An unfortunate occurance happened to the Japanese eating legend after the competition had already expired. What is known as a "reversal" in eating contest parlance transpired in which Kobayashi threw up a significant amount of hot dog waste which led the judges to deduct hot dog points from Kobayashi's final tally for the 12 minute contest.

If a competitor can actually swallow all of the hot dogs he has put in his mouth at the end of the competition, all of those hot dogs will count in his final tally. But since Kobayashi could not keep all of his hot dogs down, the ultimate winner in this challenge was Joey Chestnut by a small margin of three hot dogs. This little bit of nastiness was the only stomach-inducing moment on ESPN's annual broadcast of the event and most viewers have expected to see at least one reguritation per contest anyway.

AMERICA FINALLY TAKES BACK THE NATHAN HOT DOG CROWN THANKS TO JOEY CHESTNUT
Kobayashi had eaten a total of 53 1/2 hot dogs as a personal best a few years back which had stood as the contest's highest record since 1916. But Chestnut just completed a hot dog eating competition in Tempe, AZ, in which he devoured 59 1/2 hot dogs in a June contest.

Japan's total dominance of such an American tradition as hot dog eating that Japan had control over the last six years is finally over. At last America has something to crow about when it comes to final victory over another country, and the fact that the victory occured on the 4th of July is something we Americans can take pride in.
