Johan Cruyff, the Prince of Orange was back in his city of Canals and continued to walk on water. Despite in the twilight of a magnificent career, thirty-five year old Cruyff's star showed no sign of dimming now he once more graced the shirt of his beloved Ajax.
Like all genius, for Cruyff it was sometimes not enough to simply score a goal. The temptation persisted to go beyond. At the legendary De Meer Stadion, a Johan Cruyff inspired Ajax were in the midst of joyfully dismantling an unfortunate Helmond Sport.
Only recently promoted Helmond were toyed with by an infinitely, superior home side. Cruyff's arrival galvanised Ajax's extraordinary conveyor belt of young players like Frank Riykaard, Marco Van Basten and Jesper Olsen to excel even higher. With no finer teacher than the Dutch master himself they harnessed their craft to perfection.
Leading 1-0 against Helmond, Ajax were awarded a penalty. For Cruyff an opportunity arose to leave a lasting memory for his loyal supporters. One they will not easily forget. Helmond Sport's goalkeeper Otto Versfeld faced Johan Cruyff who astonishingly nudged the ball sideways for an onrushing Jesper Olsen.
As a perplexed Versfeld raced off his line the little Danish winger played a pass back inside for the waiting Cruyff to tap into an empty net! The roar from the terraces of the De Meer was loud if disbelieving. Even the referee appeared momentarily unclear as to whether Cruyff's innovative artistry was legal?
But then his head cleared, no rules broken and the goal was allowed. For Johan Cruyff a fitting epitaph in Ajax colours.
A Last Miracle.
