Sleep and rest are but minor reflections of death, then why is not death a type of solace. Again, the most virtuous and righteous of men die soon and settle down in the tranquility of peace soon. They are relieved from all world-weariness. They need not stress their bodies out to any further extent. Their souls are no longer forced to be oblivious to their true nature.
Donne exhibits his characteristic style here by consistent use of hyperboles. He opines that Death is not to be flattered as it is the by-product of all wars, abnormalities and diseases. An individual committing suicide has his control over death and death succumbs to him; it is never the other way around. Death also surrenders to destiny and Therefore, Death is alluded to as the Subjugator of Life. Again, even good men and maids die at untimely age, and it would be heavenly injustice; were they to die so soon. The truth is: as such people go straight to God; death is relegated in the ascent to heaven. The poet asserts that death is associated with unpleasant phenomenon like poison, war and other infirmities; then how does it win over people. Besides, poppy and potions can also put one fast asleep and is therefore better as compared to death which is more painful. One sleep past we wake up; and that is the death of Death.
