John Frieda's Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray: A Review

The Pen
I was reading the March issue of Allure Magazine, when I saw an ad for John Frieda's new Root Awakening collection of hair products, which included a de-tangling spray. The ad was set in a woodsy looking area which gave it a green feel, and it explained that the collection of Root Awakening products contained natural eucalyptus and were designed to "feed the roots and hydrate the hair while nourishing from root to tip, for hair that's noticeably more resilient, radiant, and 3x healthier."

My locks are in pretty good condition already, but I have a kinky and coarse texture and the small curls get really tangled, so it takes forever to comb and style. I've used detangling sprays before, but the ones I've tried have contained a lot of silicone, and even though my hair was easier to comb it also became hard and unnatural feeling, so I stopped using them.

I made a mental note to try John Frieda's Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray. I felt like it would help me with tangles, and make it easier to style without making my hair feel heavy and unnatural. I bought a 6oz bottle a few days later for $6.49, at an Ulta store.

The bottle is a yellow-green color with pictures of green leaves on it. It looks different from other John Frieda products which are usually more futuristic and sterile looking. I think the company is totally jumping on the eco-friendly bandwagon with this collection, because the bottle looks natural although the majority of the ingredients in the spray aren't.

I used the Root Awakening Detangling Spray after conditioning. My curls had drawn up tightly as it usually does when it's wet, and most of my hair was tangled. I parted my hair into sections and pumped out the spray onto each one.

The spray did change how my hair felt, but it changed it in a good way. Instead of making it feel heavy and stiff it actually felt light and a lot silkier, and the Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray made it smell like peppermint. Even though it's supposed to make your scalp tingle, my scalp didn't feel any different when I sprayed it on my roots.

Styling still took the usual time, but it was a lot more manageable when I combed it. Whenever there was a tangle or knot my hair had a lot more give and was less prone to breakage. I air-dried it and I noticed that the next day my hair was a softer than it normally is and my style had more hold. I'm sure the results are even more apparent when the hair is blow-dried.

Overall I really liked the John Frieda Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray. Although I do like how my hair feels naturally, I did enjoy how silky my hair felt after using this. I'm not sure if I'll see a huge difference with my looking 3x healthier, but I would recommend this for people of all hair types who want a light weight detangling spray or a heat protecting spray. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
