John Grisham, My Favorite Legal Thriller Novelist

S Faloon

I am an avid reader. I have been since childhood. It isn't possible for me to choose a favorite writer as I enjoy the work of a wide vareity of authors. John Grisham is at the top of my list of the best writers today.
I've been reading Grisham's work for close to 20 years. In his books he writes about lawyers, prosecutors, the court system in the United States and the political machinations that grind each section together. Each book has quite the thought provoking storyline. I recently read a copy of "The Confession." I have a certain mindset about the death penalty in our country. This book certainly has unique perspectives of both sides of the debate about the execution of a convicted killer. The main character of this book is a minister who is put into a terrible position as a murderer creeps into his world to make a confession that will change the life of the man of God. The confession this man makes also has the potential to change the life or fate of a death row inmate.

Grisham introduces us to rich, realistic characters while intricately weaving stories that are riveting. He also teaches us about the benefits and costs of justice, for all characters involved. He reminds us that even with law, there are times that the outcome of an arrest and trial may not always be cut and dried. Novels including "The Firm," "A Time to Kill," "The Client" and "The Rainmaker" are in my collection of books that are based on fictional lawyers with interesting stories to tell.

I highly recommend any one of John Grisham's books to anyone that enjoys a good read. If you think books about lawyers aren't your cup of tea, Grisham has also written one of the funniest books I've ever read. "Skipping Christmas" is a story about a husband who urges his wife to skip the holiday because their daughter is out of the country. This hysterical read involves the neighbors who aren't happy because the couple haven't put up decorations to the group who isn't getting the yearly tree sale. This book is worthy of being a traditional read between Thanksgiving and Christmas, especially if you are one to get caught up in the work of the season.

Another 'non-lawyer' novel is Grisham's "A Painted House." This poignant novel is another riveting read. A story told by a boy who watches his parents and grandparents struggle with farm life during rough times. It's an incredible story and one of those rare books that I plan to read more than once.

October 2011 is the scheduled release date for a new Grisham novel. "The Litigators" promises to be another good read. You can check out the plot here, http://www.jgrisham.com/the-litigators-plot-elements/ . I learned about the new book when I signed up for a current BzzAgent campaign. I was happy to see that the BzzAgent.com has now included books in it's campaigns. I was given the opportunity to receive a free copy of "The Confession" to read so I could tell you about it. This was a Bzzcampaign that I was eager to take. After all, how could I pass up a free book by one of my favorite writers?

I used to really enjoy Grisham's books, but his last few novels have been nowhere as good as his earlier work... hopefully he'll break his slump and get back to writing like he used to. Excellent article, thanks!
