John Mayer Concert in Wheatland

The lights dimmed and the concert stage was only lit from the stars above. Then the first drumbeats from the hit song, Waiting On The World To Change, saturated the humid summer air. The crowd at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Wheatland went crazy for John Mayer at his concert performance on July 25, 2008. The concert opened with Brett Dennen and Colbie Caillat, who were both wonderful, but it was when John Mayer entered the stage that the night really began to heat up. The audience seemed to know almost ever lyric he sang. There were several times that John Mayer's voice could not be heard over the voices of the audience. His personality was vivid on the stage but it was his obvious passion for music that made this concert phenomenal.

John Mayer's impressive voice aside, his guitar playing invigorated an already energized audience. All though there are several live concert CD's by John Mayer, nothing surpasses seeing and hearing him in concert. It was also especially touching when about half way through the concert he announced that although he does not normally do dedications, he wanted to dedicate a song to Randy Pausch who passed away on the day of the concert. Randy Pausch was an inspiration to millions when he gave a last lecture at Carnegie Mellon University when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given six months to live. His last lecture has been circulating on the Internet since he gave the lecture is 2007.

It was so refreshing to attend a concert where it truly was just about the music. The lighting, stage and band were excellent in their roles of showcasing the talent of John Mayer. When John started to say his goodbyes for the night, the audience was far from ready to let him leave. When he returned for his obligatory encore, he happily told the audience that he could do this "all night long". That comment got a roar from the audience, as they wanted the concert to last all night! After his sixth encore song the concert was truly over and the audience left happy, satisfied and bigger fans than ever. The parking lot was filled with cars playing John Mayer CD's and people really did not seem to mind the time it took to leave the lot. Attending a John Mayer concert was a lifetime highlight and is highly recommended to anyone who has the opportunity.
