John Mayer's Latest CD Continuum: Fans of the Blues Will Appreciate This Release

John Mayer's latest album Continuum hit shelves of retailers in early September but hasn't made a big splash with his fan base yet. "Waiting on the World to Change" was the first single released from the Continuum album. The song climbed the Billboard Top 100 songs and peaked at the number 20 position.

John Mayer's latest album release has coincided with his latest tour, which featured Sheryl Crow as his tour counterpart. The two toured from early August of this year until mid-October as part of an effort to gain exposure for his latest album. More exposure for Continuum was gained by John Mayer's appearance on the season premiere of CBS's hit television drama CSI. In the episode, a bar scene featured Mayer on stage singing "Waiting on the World to Change," as well as "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room."

So far fans haven't made the album explode like past albums Room for Squares and Heavier Things. Although, it is worth noting that tickets for tour dates were especially hard to come by for the latest tour schedule. Look for John Mayer's Continuum to be an album that grows on new and old fans alike. The different sound this album offers is contrary to what fans expected of Mayer and could be the reason fans haven't latched on to this album just yet.

In earlier albums, Mayer has given fans a very raw acoustic sound that oozed of his ability to play complicated melodic lines and improvise. However, with Continuum, John Mayer gives listeners a chance to hear his blues side. Songs such as "Vultures" and "I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You)" really change the face of John Mayer's music. The jazz backbone that we see in most of the album is a pop-like variation of his work with the John Mayer Trio.

Look for songs such as "Belief" and "Gravity" to be the biggest hits from Continuum. "Belief" is a song that centers on the subject of war, and while not specifically directed at the War on Terror or the War in Iraq, the song does seem to hint at ideas against the current wars. Such territory isn't unchartered, just ask Natalie Maines and the Dixie Chicks. Along with "Belief", "Waiting on the World to Change" also has war undertones. While both songs have war references and undertones, the mediocre album sales likely aren't a result of the issues mentioned in the lyrics. Overall, while the sales haven't been stellar, the quality of John Mayer's music has been maintained at a high level. Continuum is yet another example of why Mayer is an outstanding innovator with his guitar. True fans of guitar playing and blues will undoubtedly appreciate the quality of music from John Mayer in Continuum.
