John Mellencamp and Wife Splitting After 20 Years

Abby Greenhill
John Mellencamp, age 59, and his wife of 20 years, Elaine, are calling it quits. The ending of their marriage sounds all nice and calm from what they are saying. They plan on raising their two kids in Indiana. So far no dirty name calling or back stabbing from this rocker and his wife. Let's hope the civility lasts, it's so much nicer that way.

If the name John Mellencamp isn't all that familiar to you, perhaps you remember him as John Cougar, his stage name back in the early 80's. You may know some of his songs such as, "Hurts so Good" and "Jack and Diane". As stars sometimes do, as his popularity grew so did his name as he became John Mellencamp. He isn't a Bon Jovi type, but this rocker has his share of loyal fans.

His lovely wife was a 23-year-old model when they met.. She had been hired as a model for the cover of his album "Whenever we Wanted". Twenty years is a pretty good track record as things go in the music world. Good luck to both of them.

It's been quite a year with divorces, engagements, babies, break-ups, etc. Celebrities leaving marriages or entering new relationships are always hot topics. Then there are the baby-engagement-marriage announcements. Call me old-fashioned, but what happened to engagement-marriage-baby? Whatever the case, life goes one. Whatever a celebrity does, good or bad, catches our attention and draws us in. In some cases we wish we were them, and other times glad we aren't.

We get to live vicariously though the good times, and we can choose to ignore the bad times. But reality is here and now, and that's where most of us live. But then again we aren't paying huge divorce settlements. We don't have our x-spouses photos plastered across every newspaper and TV in the free world.

The day is young, there could still be a few more divorces announced, marriages revealed or baby bumps acknowledged. But for now, all is quiet as we await the end of 2010. For those who can't wait to say good-bye, hopefully the new year will bring hope, joy and wonderful adventures. For those who already have been blessed, I wish you more blessing and good fortune in 2011.

Happy New Year - oh, one last word - please don't drink and drive. The life you save may be mine.

Sad news, thanks for the info. Still must leave comments as a guest and fill out captchas every time, even though I am logged in! I have contacted AC/Yahoo about this and gotten no response. Frustrating. : /

I often wonder if the ones who leave the marriage/relationship end up happier after all the upheaval.

Too bad they couldn't last, I always thought they would defy the odds.

It's always sad to hear of a celebrity break-up after so many years of marriage.

I like John, but he needs a nice wife to soothe his temperamental qualities. I feel sorry this has happened.
