The debate of the existence of poetry in music is one that is unlikely to be solved anytime soon. Some feel that song lyrics are far removed from the discipline of poetry while others think that they are one in the same. Could there be a happy medium? In certain cases their certainly is. The classical interpretation using rhyme and meter can be found throughout music, but does not necessarily determine what poetry is and the power it can have on its fans.
For years "Rap" and "Hip-Hop" have been considered (by those who understand the genre) to be a form of urban poetry. Rap and hip-hop have both been called voice from the street. The music can bring to life circumstances and experiences that would otherwise go unnoticed and ignored, if not thrown in the faces of those who would rather not know the truth. Screaming from the underbelly of the cities where only blocks away from the struggle exists extreme wealth. To see it and know it cannot be attained feeds the music and makes it a force of its own.
Johnny Crome a new and inspired hip-hop artist brings to his music the same suffering and creates art from it. With his goals set on a football career, they were rudely shattered just as things looked the brightest. Living in New Haven, Connecticut and seeing the privileged of Yale University take from the surrounding impoverished communities; Johnny Crome decided that maybe he had something to say.
With the upcoming release of his latest album "Life In 3D," there is no mistake Johnny Crome knows where he is going, because he remembers where he comes from. For more information on Johnny Crome and his music go to http://www.johnnycromenow.com/ and see where poetry is headed.
