None of the the first 11 movies Johnny Depp starred in made over $100 million dollars at the box office. He was in Platoon in 1986 but had a very small role and did not star in the Academy Award winning movie. His first movie was A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) which was the first of the slasher series of Elm Street movies with Freddy Kreuger but the movie only made $25.5 million at the box office.
Other notable films Depp starred in early in his career include such cult classics as Edward Scissorhands, Benny and Joon and What's Eating Gilbert Grape but none of them where box office hits. In 1994 Depp teamed up with director Tim Burton to make Ed Wood a movie about cult-film director Ed Wood whose movies always bombed at the box office. Fittingly Ed Wood also bombed and has made just $5.9 million dollars.
In 1997 Johnny Depp started to find his box office magic with Donnie Brasco which cleared $124 million in worldwide ticket sales. After being in no $100 million dollar movies in his first 11 tries from Donnie Brasco on Depp has starred in 23 movies and 11 of them have made over $100 million.
In 2003 Johnny Depp really found his box office money making magic. Since then he has made 13 movies and nine of them have cleared at least $100 million at the box office. These are Johnny Depp's highest grossing movies to date:
1) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) - $1.1 billion dollars worldwide at box office
This highly successful film series also stars the fetchingly attractive Keira Knightly but Johnny Depp is the star and the reason most go to see these films.
2) Alice in Wonderland (2010) - $1 billion
Alice in Wonderland is helped out by higher ticket prices moviegoers pay for 3D. But Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have hooked up for some real money makers.
3) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) - $960 million
4) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - $654 million
5) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) - $475 million
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is much truer to the book the movie is based upon with the same name unlike the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Author Roald Dahl hated the 1971 movie. Tim Burton directed the 2005 smash hit.
6) Public Enemies (2009) - $214 million
In Public Enemies Johnny Depp plays Depression era criminal John Dillinger.
7) Sleepy Hollow (1999) - $206 million
Another box office hit starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton.
In total Johnny Depp has made 34 movies that have grossed a total of $6 billion dollars worldwide. The average Johnny Depp film has grossed $176.5 million dollars. Very few actors if any in Hollywood have better box office money magic than Johnny Depp does making movies.
