Johnny Depp has been named People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" for 2009. This is Depp's second "Sexiest Man Alive" win. His first People Magazine win was in 2003, the year the Pirate's of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released.

His last "Pirates" movie was released in 2007. The U. K. Daily Mail is reporting that Depp signed a $32 million agreement to film a fourth pirate's movie: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

People editor Julie Jordan explained Johnny Depp's win, "The thing about Johnny is he has proven his sexiness over the years." She said he was the only actor who "can pull off the sexiness" behind such bizarre characters as Willie Wonka and the Mad Hatter. Jordan also claims that Depp has longevity that has withstood the test of time.

Johnny Depp's only leading role in 2009 was when he played John Dillenger in Public Enemies. Public Enemies was based on a non-fiction book by Bryan Burroughs and set in 1933.

At age 46, Johnny Depp is the twenty-fourth People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. People Magazine started this award in 1985. The first winner was Mel Gibson after he starred in the Mad Max film.

2008's "Sexiest Man Alive" was Hugh Jackman. Jackman, an Australian born actor, starred and produced the movie Deception that same year. He also starred opposite Nicole Kidman in the film Australia, in 2008.

Previous "Sexiest Man Alive" award winners include Sean Connery in 1989, Tom Cruise in 1990, and Patrick Swayze in 1991. John F. Kennedy Jr. won the award in 1988. He is the only non-actor to win the "Sexiest Man Alive" award.

Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford were named People Magazine's "Sexiest Couple Alive" in 1993. This was the only year that People named two winners.
