Johnny Depp and Tim Burton: A Look at Their Collaborations

Nicole Hogsett
A soul mate is defined as one of two persons compatible with each other in disposition, point of view, or sensitivity. And while most people take these words to refer to a romantic relationship, has anyone ever considered that two business partners could be soul mates? Take for instance Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Johnny Depp was the young star of a hot TV show trying his best to not find himself pigeonholed into the heartthrob category, and Tim Burton is the off-beat, almost gothic director of some of the best and most visually appealing films in recent history. But when they collaborate they are unstoppable, bringing to life incredible characters and brilliant, vibrant stories; the duo bring out the best in each other, and that in and of itself, creates magic for the audience. Below is a look at the dazzling work they have created together.

Edward Scissorhands - a twisted fairy tale about a boy created by a man, with hands made out of scissors, trying to live in the real world, and at its heart, a love story between a boy and a girl, trying to put their differences aside and make their relationship work, was Burton and Depp's first collaboration, and for all intents and purposes, a modern classic.

Memorable Quote: "I am not complete"

Ed Wood - the story of the movie director famous for making bad movies seemed like an odd one to tell, but when Tim Burton and Johnny Depp worked on the project, they created their usual magic by making the characters vivid, the story funny and filming the movie entirely in black and white was a stroke of genius.

Memorable Quote: "My girlfriend still doesn't know why her sweaters are always stretched out"

Sleepy Hollow - a legitimately scary and funny movie, Depp created yet another offbeat character in Ichabod Crane, called into the small town to stop a headless horseman he doesn't necessarily believe exists. The movie mixes comedy and violence as well as intrigue and mystery.

Memorable Quote: "It was a horseman, a dead one. Headless"

Corpse Bride - the duos foray into animation was quite successful with this film. Depp voiced Victor Van Dort, a man about to be married, but when he goes into the woods to practice his vows, he actually becomes married to a corpse and is taken to the world of the dead. Their animated adventure is a fun and enthralling ride.

Memorable Quote: "I've got a dwarf and I'm not afraid to use him!"

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - remaking a classic children's film may seem risky, but when Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are involved you know there will be new shades of color to the character, and more importantly, a bright, visual world created. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a testimony to all that is great about Depp and Burton's partnership, as well as an enjoyable film for audiences of all ages.

Memorable Quote: "Everything in this room is eatable, even I'm eatable! But that is called 'cannibalism', my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies."

Sweeney Todd - based on the Broadway musical, Sweeney Todd marked the first time Depp sang on film. The movie musical brought to life fascinating, dark characters, as well as musical sequences that weren't as bright and fun as ones seen in past musicals, but instead fit the dark setting of the movie and still proved memorable.

Memorable Quote: "These are desperate times, Mrs. Lovett and desperate measures are called for."

Alice in Wonderland - the duos seventh collaboration will most probably benefit from having the star and director attached to them, as there is no other actor who would be more convincing in bringing the Mad Hatter's whimsy to life, and most certainly no other director that can take all that is interesting about Wonderland and make it even more visual and more enticing than it is in previous movies or books.

Memorable Quote: "Some say to survive it you need to be as mad as a hatter, which luckily: I am!"

Here's to all the incredible hits from two true visionaries, as well as much more to come, because when Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are attached to a project together, you already know it is going to be good - the question just becomes: how good?
