A hiking club can be as simple as a group of friends or can be a more organized effort, with a group having official meetings and even 50 or more members. Many colleges also have hiking clubs. To find a hiking club in your area, you may want to start by looking online. Websites such as MeetUp.com will list local groups with there being usually at least one hiking club in a region. Other good resources to check are your local community center, local newspaper, or to just stop by your local outdoors store and ask if they have any information on local hiking clubs.
While hiking is not an expensive activity, there may be some fees associated with joining groups, which go towards paying for equipment, bookkeeping, and entry fees for some parks and nature areas. Hiking clubs do not only go on day hikes, but often go on overnight excursions to outdoor areas that may be more than a few hours drive from your city or town. This is one of the most fun parts of being in a hiking club as you get to bond with your club members and see experience amazing wilderness areas at the same time.
If you have done everything mentioned above and still have not been able to find a hiking club in your area, why not start one? It can be as simple as setting up a MySpace.com or Facebook.com page advertising a hiking club and then contacting members in your area who have listed hiking as an interest. Also consider taking out an ad in your local newspaper, posting fliers around town or stopping by your local sporting goods, or outdoors store, and asking if you can post fliers there. You will need to make some considerations about membership fees and a meeting place for the club. Consider finding someone with a similar interest who has business or financial experience who can help with organizing the financial and accounting aspects of the club. Before long, you may have more than enough members to have a full club going.
If you are someone who has enjoyed hiking for a long time but has only done it with your close friends, or by yourself, joining a hiking club may be a great experience for you. Why not try it and see for yourself?
