Jolaine's Top 5 Favorite Ads of 2008

Jolaine Scott
Ads are everywhere. Absolutely everywhere. So when you are watching TV you see tons of them. They are meant to stick in your head to get you to purchase that product or service. Most are not memorable at all. Some are simply bad. But a few are good, funny or simply great. And then there are those that stick with you.

One of my favorite TV commercials is the PC/Mac series that is done by Apple Mac. The entire series of this commercial is pretty fun and cute. The one in particular that is so funny is where PC is holding a red buzzer. When either he or Mac says Vista, he pushes the buzzer. Because PC says that Vista is a bad word. Really these commercials are pretty tasteful. I am not saying that I am buying a Mac because of that commercial. I am only saying that that commercial is pretty good and quite memorable. This ad doesn't use sex, drugs, or anything of that nature which makes it one of the best ads out there for everyone.

Ok, now I don't know how many of you watch sports or even like sports for that matter. But this commercial is just too good to ignore. It is a commercial for Sony HDTV. It talks about how if sporting events are shot on a Sony camera shouldn't you watch on a Sony. There are statements by sports figures. One being the mascot of a Chicken. But the guy that is thinking about buying the TV doesn't like sports. The Chicken gets really angry and tries to jump over the table. Peyton Manning has to hold Chicken back. It is just too funny. I have seen it many many times and it is still funny. A high ranking commercial to say the least.

Ok, I am not done mentioning Peyton Manning. My next commercial choice is a World MasterCard one that has people dissing Peyton Manning. One tells him not to choke. Peyton just takes it as a great suggestion. Several people tell him things and he just smiles and thanks them. Very funny to see Mr. Manning going about his time while just being as friendly as can be. You will have to see it to totally get the full effect of the commercial. But it makes my top five because it is so very memorable.

USA Network has some great commercials to promote their programming. And I tell you that they come up with some great stuff. But the one that I remember the most is a recent one for the program Monk. The ad took the characters of Monk and put them into the opening from the old series Magnum PI. It was hysterical!! Just too funny. It worked even if you don't watch Monk. I happen to watch that show, but I can see that commercial swaying someone to take another look or even a first look at that show. The ad people on that network get mucho kudos for their great ads.

Now, for my very favorite of the year. If you have children you will be able to relate to this ad. The commercial is advertising the rollover minutes of AT&T cellular. It starts with two teenage boys arguing over new minutes verses old rollover minutes. The mom comes in. She tells the one boy that there are no differences in the minutes. He starts to argue. But the mom gets irritated. She mixes up the minutes, and then pulls one out. She asks the son if he can tell her which minute it is. He says no. She says she can't hear him. He says no louder. It is so funny. I laugh every time I see it. I can so relate. I don't have that cellular company myself, but I just adore that commercial. It is really great stuff. I vote it number 1 for the year. Just too funny.

Whatever ads work for you, there will be new ones coming out soon. Just look for the Super Bowl in February to see a slew of new and interesting ones. I hope that you find something interesting to watch during those ads.
