Jolicloud - Ubuntu Based Netbook Operating System

J.A. McLynne
Jolicloud is a relative newcomer to the netbook operating system scene, bringing its own slick interface that runs primarily networked applications. You will find that Jolicloud is a more toned down version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Jolicloud's applications are geared toward using a computer that will have full time access to the internet. For netbooks, this is rarely the case, since they have to rely on WiFi. Netbooks are meant to be portable, WiFi may not be available. Unless you have full time Wifi or a 3G wireless availability, you will find that JoliCloud is lacking in features unless you install some of the desktop applications like those that are packages with other desktop Linux systems like mainstream Ubuntu or Redhat.

The Web Engine at the Heart of Jolicloud
The web application is based on Google Chrome, a switch from the Mozilla usually found on a lot of Linux systems. This makes for a fast browsing experience, even on the most underpowered computers. Google Chrome has shown that it performs even better than Firefox on Ubuntu platforms, as it is a light browser that is compatible with just about every website on the Internet.

Jolicloud is also HTML5 ready, the much talked about replacement for Adobe Flash that Steve Jobs has been talking about of late.

Software for Jolicloud
When you are connected to the internet you can still install and run offline applications. OpenOffice, and all of the other Ubuntu favorites are available in the software download center. Also, you can count on multi-touch screen support becoming available when it is release in Ubuntu 10.10 later this year.

Applications that allow you to interact easily with your favorite social sites include Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Boxee, and Hulu. Quick links are also available to Skype, Flickr, Youtube, and Google Maps. It is in the area of social applications that clear sets Jolicloud apart from other light operating systems. There is a application that allows you to follow other Jolicloud users.

Jolicloud Best Hardware
Jolicloud was created with netbooks and older computers. Because Jolicloud is using the super fast Linux Kernel as its underlying architecture, there is a small memory foot print, and you do not really need to run anti-virus software, which also may have a slowing effect on older, low-end PCs.

Jolicloud is based on Ubuntu, thus when you install the operating system, you will basically have the same experience you have when installing Ubuntu. The graphical user interface of the installer is laid out clearly and the installation process well documented.
