Jon and Kate Plus 8: Uncle Says Gosselin Kids Are Being Exploited

Maggie Blake
Due to recent tabloid articles and extensive media coverage, the Gosselin family, who star in the TLC reality series Jon &Kate Plus 8, are receiving unprecedented public attention. Jon and Kate Gosselin are the parents of two sets of multiples; a set of twin daughters and a set of sextuplets. Their family life has been the focus of a reality show since the sextuplets were born, just over five years ago. As a result of their reality show, Jon and Kate Gosselin have also been the focus of much scrutiny, courtesy of the American public. And as if it isn't enough for the stars of Jon and Kate Plus 8 to be criticized by millions of television viewers, it seems now that their own family members are now stepping up to voice their concerns.

Kate Gosselin's brother Kevin, and his wife Jodi, appeared on the CBS Early Show this week, to express their opinion that their eight nieces and nephews are being exploited by their parents. The children's Aunt and Uncle explained that they want to speak up on behalf of the Gosselin kids because they feel that Jon and Kate do much of what they do with their children solely for the sake of hiking up ratings for their show. Additionally, it was mentioned that the Gosselin kids themselves have expressed that they don't want the television cameras around them as much as they are.

As with all things Jon and Kate Plus 8, there will most definitely be a division of opinion among the American public regarding this latest tidbit of controversy regarding the show. One side will agree that the children are indeed being exploited by their parents; thrown into the spotlight for nothing else but monetary gain. This group will likely support the idea that the children are at risk for serious psychological repercussions as a result of the Jon and Kate Plus 8 show and all of the drama that surrounds it. Obviously, the opposing side will see this move by Aunt Jodi and Uncle Kevin as silly or even alarmist.

Regardless of what fans and critics of Jon and Kate Plus 8 think, the undeniable reality is that Jon and Kate Gosselin's children are taken care of. They are very clearly supervised, fed regularly, and not victims of physical abuse. Frankly, they are faring better than 95% of the world's children. Whether their parents are likeable or not, the kids get what they need and, unlike many of our country's children, probably have solid college funds. Additionally, their parents, thanks to the show, can afford to ensure that the Gosselin kids get to live in a safe community, attend good schools, eat healthy, and have adequate health care. Viewing the situation from this perspective, it's difficult to understand why anyone would feel the need to go on national television to declare that the youngest stars of Jon and Kate Plus 8 are in dire need of intervention.

Sure, maybe the kids of Jon and Kate Plus 8 have stated that they don't like the cameras being around all the time. My kids don't like cleaning their room, but they are not abused because I make them do it. No child's upbringing is without some negativity, and the fact that the Gosselin kids have to deal with people following them around with cameras is nothing compared to the negativity most of the world's children contend with every day. Despite this fact, we can all be sure that there will be more Jon and Kate Plus 8 drama to come. And, fortunately for the Gosselin kids' college funds, the show's ratings will soar as a result.

Kate's brother and Aunt Jodi needed to have been silent during this nasty tabloid time. I felt it was a little distasteful of them, and arrogant. As far as exploitation...hmm...that's a hard one. I do think that some of the children will have some psychological problems later, particularily the twins. The cameras have caught so many things on film, I think when they hit puberty, some of them, will not welcome their whole lives put out there for the public to scrutinize. However, they do live well, they now have the best, but I bet they would trade it in a minute if daddy would come home and get over himself,(Kate too)
