Jon and Kate Plus Eight: Divorce or Publicity Stunt?

Susan Braun
Viewers of TLC's top-rated series Jon and Kate Plus Eight are no strangers to the drama surrounding the family. But recently, even the normal drama of the bickering couple was stepped up a notch.

People magazine and US Weekly's March 12, 2009 issues both featured stories about Jon visiting bars near his mother's Huntingdon, Pennsylvania home, drinking and posing for pictures with college students.

Jon denies any serious wrong-doing. But viewers have seen increasing emotional distance between Jon and Kate during recent episodes. Previews for the March 23 season finale appeared ominous. Clips were shown of Kate berating Jon over his failure to use a coupon. The couple admitted they were in "a difficult place" and Jon declared things were "hard for me."

This has led to wild speculation online. Are Jon and Kate divorcing? Let's weigh the options, based on what we know:

YES, JON AND KATE ARE DONE AS A COUPLE:

  • Jon and Kate's body language has changed noticeably. During earlier episodes, they frequently laughed and joked with each other, and Kate would stroke Jon's face or give him "love taps". More recently, Jon and Kate interact little with each other in their "couch interviews" and often appear to be sitting as far as possible from each other.
  • Kate is traveling more and more frequently "on business", both promoting her current book Multiple Blessings and her upcoming titles, Eight Little Faces and Love is in the Mix: Making Meals Into Memories, and promoting various companies and products. Jon travels some too, as evidenced in a recent episode when he and Cara took a father/daughter ski trip to Utah. Jon and Kate rarely travel together anymore. In fact, they are not even both at home at the same time much.

NO, JON AND KATE ARE FINE:
  • Jon and Kate have never related to each other in a lovey-dovey way (well, except when they were dating and when they were just married). Interviewed for a Valentine's Day 2009 story, Kate said, "We're not romantic or lovey. We're not that couple" (8 Love Tips from Jon and Kateby Kelly DiNardo).
  • Jon and Kate have become excellent at promoting themselves. What would promote more interest in the family than the suspicion that all is not well? "Our strength comes from the fact that we have survived a lot of valleys," Kate says in People's March 12 issue.
  • TLC often uses speculation and gimmicks to drive up ratings. Earlier in the year, they touted a "big announcement" on Jon and Kate. When the episode arrived, the "big announcement" was Jon telling Kate he planned to ask her more often how he could help her. Undoubtedly, if viewers thought Jon and Kate were splitting, many would tune in to see what happened.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Jon and Kate. But one thing we can be sure of: they'll have a big audience watching.

    Okay, RATINGS! much needed...because why?

Now Who's gonna Blow Ratings of the Map in the coming Months/Fall 2009???

    You guessed it: "Octo-Pussy-Mom"

so Jon/Kate & the 8 are history. Anything to keep America's attention because 'Octo-Mom' is bringing the DRAMA.
They are no different than Octo-Mom, since when did multiple-breeding become a 'Career' ?

This is all a marketing scheme and it worked! Look how obsessed we are! The timing is impeccable, check the facts people and then realize all reality shows are based on 'manufactured drama'

  • Punked? Hmm...5/9/2009

Who filmed Jon leaving this alleged woman house in the am? Odd. If I find out this is a publicity stunt, I am not going to support this show anymore! Or buy they books...Who is with me???

A little too convenient. This "possible affair" just happens to fall during a promotion book tour and right before a new season? Not likely. It's called marketing, and the people who cook up and orchestrate these type of hype-building events get paid quite well to do it. It's not called show "biz" for nothing. Reality tv is FAR from actual reality, and there are no such thing as "convenient surprises" when you are dealing with a product/show or franchise that pulls in the money that a show like J&K8 does for it's parent company.

Knowing that, I do hope somebody is thinking about these kids welfare from all of this exposure/filming/magazine covers/etc. These kids have been part of this money machine since they came into this world, and that has to skew their sense of the real world somewhat.

I too love the show. It gives me a lot of ideas on how to cut my budget and how to make the days fun for my 3 litle ones. I do however diagree strongly that they show the kids getting dressed/ and half dressed at times. I think the world is too sick out here to expose innocent children in that manner. I love the show, but I think in alot of ways Jon and kate should take a break from t.v and let the kids have more privacy.

i have been watching this show from the very beginning and i believe both Jon and Kate are wonderful. They go through many things raising their kids, but I believe they allow their children to be individuals, they know all 8 of them is their own little person that"s what makes them a family grace age 52 and wish I could have been the parent you both are.

i know this is just an opinion but if any one of the ppl out there were in jon and kate's place, would you be stressed or what? Marriage withe eight kids and then cameres and fans esp the kind who have to think and sy the worst has to be tough. this just goes to show how ppl r getting so far from what we all used to be, compassionate for others. where is the understanding for these ppl who have shared their lives with the public? seems like everyone is gettiing a little hungry for unhappiness like we are at a roman gladiator stadium huh?

  • plntpolice3/26/2009

I always read about this show and wish I could watch it, but I don't get this cable channel.

  • Mary Sullivan3/26/2009

You bring up some good points on both sides!

  • Jenny Powers3/24/2009

I think they bicker all the time- Jon seems ticked off half the time and I've never seen it as a good marriage. Then again with twins myself, my husband and I have had more spats than ever before and we don't have six other kids!
