Jon and Kate Plus Eight: Is the End Near?

A Philadelphia Magazine Article Cites Evidence that All is Not Well in Jon and Kate Land

Susan Braun
Jon and Kate Plus Eight - TLC's most popular series - has devoted fans by the millions. We tune in to see the cute kids, and the "real" banter between Jon and Kate. Or do we, anymore? In the last year, the show has seemed to feature more and more of Jon and Kate, and less and less of the kids. Many episodes recently have not showed twins Mady or Cara at all. And the interactions of Jon and Kate have morphed from realistic bickering to downright mean grousing on Kate's part. The family has gone from meandering down the street to a July 4th parade to galavanting across the country for free trips to Hawaii, Disney World, Utah ski resorts, and more.

A February article in Phildelphia Magazine, by Jessica Remo, is one of the first attempts in the mainstream press to take an objective look at the family.

The article begins by detailing an appearance by Kate at a New York church, where Kate appeared much as I described her at another recent appearance: flawlessly made up, stylishly dressed, and giving a well-rehearsed spiel.

The article begins to unravel some Gosselin myths. First, the oft-repeated line that Jon was fired from his job because his employer did not want to insure the large Gosselin tribe. In the article, David Rothermel (the allegedly stingy boss) tells us that Jon was fired for reasons totally unrelated to insurance. Allegedly, Jon worked a side job on company time. Perhaps most interesting of all, Rothermel claims that Jon was surfing the net and making calls for freebies even before the sextuplets were born, boasting that he would never have to work again.

Despite a heavy speaking schedule, the Gosselins apparently have cancelled several engagements. The article cites Jody Clark, of the Ohio Child Conservation League. She had booked Jon and Kate for an October convention appearance (in exchange for a $3000 speaking fee, first-class airfare, accomodations and a rental car). Clark was contacted by the Gosselins' manager, Julie Carson May, who told her the Gosselins had "spoken to God, and made the decision" not to speak after all. May offered Clark an autographe photo in compensation. Clark was understandably upset, and share her thoughts that the show has "taken on a life of its own; it's so commercial. I think the jig is up with them."

We also learn that Aunt Jodi (who was frequently shown babysitting the children) is no longer appearing on the show because Kate objected when TLC wanted to compensate Jodi for her appearances. Jodi's sister Julie documented this on her now-defunct blog, which at one point featured video of Jodi stating, "Sometimes the truth is hard to hear, and this is one of those situations."

With non-flattering press beginning for the Gosselins, one wonders how long fans will continue tuning in. Will the "cute" and "real" factors override the greedy and unethical ones?

Wow - does all this mean that there really IS a God, watching out for us?? : )
I agree with Judy. I remember when you actually LEARNED things from The Learning Channel; now it's an avenue for this kind of ridiculousness. The same type that you get from most any of these "reality" shows; thank heaven very few peoples' realities are comprised of them. Though I've never watched this show, it's in the news enough and stories about this woman are frequent enough to easily see, the reason for the husband leaving her is because she's a wench, the whole idea got completely skewered in the parents' unending need for attention, and really - does any of this truly matter? Perhaps those children can become "regular" children now, and The Learning Channel can remember how to be entertainingly educational, again.

I feel that there was a reason why God didn't let Kate get preg. the natural way and now its evident why. He sees begginning to end and now the kids will pay the ultimate price. I think the show should be taken off the air it is just another soap opera now.

I'm done with the show. They are shameless. Sadly, I will definitely miss the children, but Kate and Jon have turned this once entertaining and happy show into fodder for tabloids. Don't blame the paparazzi-you two created this whole drama. Shame on you both.

Kay, many here posting believe Kate has to meet THEIR expectations. Kate cannot be angry. Kate cannot stress out. Kate shouldn't do this or that. Jon needs to be a certain way. They haven't screwed up their "fame". According to some on these boards, Kate needs their approval. Oh and for those who think it's winding down...SEASON 5 BEGINS IN MAY!! ENJOY!

I quit letting my kids watch this show as I don't want them to see how Kate's actions on how she treats her husband in front of their children is OK.
On my part I watching quit because of the lack of morals and the above as to their lies which now are being exposed.

Isn't the end near??? Not because of greed and scandal, but because Jon & Kate are reportedly fed up with one another and are about to get a divorce?

I wanted to let everybody know that Jon & Kate plus 8 is very interesting. Kate is very strong and proud. Jon is a hard worker. But they are also good rolemodles for all people. Take a minute and watch the news you will find out what really people are like and where or what happens to there children. I do watch Nancy Grace and it makes me sick what people do to there family. So I rather let my kids watch Jon & Kate Plus 8 thats why its called tlc. Now myself I am a full time mother. I have 3 kids of my own and they are a very big hand full but I love them a lot and watching them grow up is very exciting. I also have a very hard working man in my life which he is the father of my two children. We live one day at a time just like Jon & Kate. So turn your head or watch something else ....And Yes! they should keep the show on. To Jon & Kate if you come apond this note just remember one thing you are human we all have problems just don't let it get to you, people can be ignorent.

if you don't like the show don't watch it. i still love the show and see that these parents are real. you try to raise 8 kids and not go nuts once in awhile. as for the free stuff, DID THEY ASK FOR IT,i think not so if you have a problem turn off your tv set and get a life of your own.
