Too Bad I Can't Afford It

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are the best reasons to pay for cable TV. They have great influence on many people and they brought back the funny side of politics in our lives. They are the only good things about the weekdays. Some like them, some don't but nobody doubts their political or cultural force. Even Obama owes them a lot for their support.

Jon Stewart is coming to Binghamton University's Events Center on Friday, March 27. This was great news to many students and once heard the news, many were certain that they wanted to see the show. But when the ticket prices were announced, they got disappointed. There were no discounts for graduate students and the cheapest tickets (restricted view) were $30 before tax! The main level tickets were $45 and $38.

Why does Jon Stewart come to a State University and make his show so expensive? There is no doubt that it will be a great show, it will be a lot of fun and he deserves money more than many others. But doesn't he know that this is a big amount of money for students? Binghamton University is not Princeton or Harvard either. Does he really have to ask so much money from students? Binghamton University has many students that come from low income families who would love to watch Jon Stewart live. Why not make the tickets something more affordable for students?

Binghamton University is only three hours from New York City and most probably Jon Stewart will come for the show and go back to his home on the same day. His show does not require a big cast or large fancy spectacles to make it as expensive as a Broadway Musical. Unfortunately and most probably the biggest portion of the money goes to Jon Stewart himself. The smart and "socially conscious" TV host we love but can only afford to see on TV.

The majority of TV celebrities forget the conditions of regular people who earn money like regular people and therefore can only spend like regular people. Looks like Jon Stewart (of all people) is no exception. What a disappointment.

Jon Stewart is said to be the most trusted man in United States. He on the other hand, repeats that his objective is "to entertain" not to inform. But apparently he is very well aware of his power, or the show's power. He deals with the important acts of the world and just because his uses satire to deliver his point, he expects (or he says he expects) that the audience should not take him seriously. Isn't there something unrightful about all this?

The ticket prices being so expensive in Binghamton University is again catches attention on that regard. He acts like he is socially conscious, as if he would care for students under loans, but obviously he doesn't.

To the audience who can afford the show "Have fun, enjoy the show! But don't forget - it is just a show!"
