Jonas Brothers: Lines, Vines and Trying Times

A Review of Their Newest CD

k. ferguson
I have followed Joe, Kevin and Nick Jonas since right before Camp Rock (on Disney Channel) debuted, and I have also seen them on Hannah Montana as well. Leading up to the release of this CD, Disney Channel showed snippets of new videos and interviews. They also promoted their new comedy show "Jonas", starring the famous three brothers, and their youngest brother, (the "Bonus Jonas" as they call him), Frankie. Their new show also features their music, too.

Because of all of the promotions, I started to really enjoy their music and decided to purchase their newest CD, "Lines, Vines and Trying Times." It is a rockin' album and is now one of my favorites. This CD will not collect dust on my shelf like many other purchases. This is enjoyable for me, as a Mom, and also for my kids. This is an enhanced CD and has bonus features when you put it in your computer to play. (Internet access needed.)Please see below for the track list and a short review of each song.

World War III: A song with great lyrics for anyone who has been in a rocky relationship. I love the horns in the song; they make you want to get up and dance.

Paranoid: Kevin is an awesome guitar player and it shows in this song. I love Nick and Joe's vocals in this song. It is my favorite and I turn it up every time it comes on. Nick has great passion in this song, and then comes Joe strong with the chorus. Wow... not enough words to describe this song. I love it!

Fly With Me: Nick's breathy vocals make this a very dreamy song. You could just close your eyes and let your imagination wander until the chorus kicks in and makes you want to dance. I love the airplane flying off at the end of the song!

Poison Ivy: This is my second favorite song. Kevin's guitar is powerful and addicting. The lyrics are powerful and hilarious for anyone who has been in a bad breakup. Every time I listen to it, I hear something new to laugh to. You will know what I mean when you hear it.

Hey Baby: Yet another get up and dance song. I love the vocals!

Before The Storm featuring Miley Cyrus: Nick and Miley's voices melt together and make a great duet. This is a powerful ballad and very mature for two young singers. The lyrics are very strong, and worth reading over in the booklet.

What Did I Do To Your Heart: This is an upbeat song with country twang. The fiddle and harmonica add to the song and make it a real toe tapper.

Much Better: The booklet best describes this song. Joe Jonas describes this song as giving back to their fans for following them for two years. He also describes their influences as "from the Bee Gee's to Neil Diamond". I can see (hear) it in this song, but I also hear a bit of Michael Jackson as well.

Black Keys: A lyrically powerful song written by Nick. Read the booklet while listening to the song. It is mesmerizing.

Don't Charge Me For The Crime featuring Common : Very strong vocals from Joe and Nick and a special appearance from Hip-Hop legend Common. I don't listen to Hip-Hop, but I do like this song. It grows on you.

Turn Right: A love song; a beautiful, slow and harmonious love song.

Don't Speak: This is a nice song and, to me, has an 80's feel to it. Another favorite; the more I hear it, the more I like it.

(Bonus Track) Keep It Real: A great song with a rock and big band feel. It is full of energy and makes you want to get up and dance!

This is a great, rockin' CD and I now want to collect their previous releases as well. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Since writing this review, "Lines, Vines and Trying Times" has not left my side. I listen to it everywhere and my son requests it turned up when Paranoid and Poison Ivy come on. Awesome CD.

Great review Karen! Keep up the good work on writing these reviews. I can't say that the Jonas Brothers are my faves cuz I don't have anyone who is in the age group to like them. I tend to listen to rock music but I'm sure with your kids, you find it very enjoyable! Great music for them to listen to!
