On our latest trip down to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, we discovered the Jonathan Edwards Winery. This small winery is located in North Stonington, Connecticut about 10 minutes from Foxwoods, 15 minutes from Mystic, 20 minutes from Mohegan Sun and maybe 10 minutes from Interstate 95's exit 92. The winery is only a few miles off of Route 2 (a major road in the area).
We all ended up enjoying the Jonathan Edwards Winery and thought it was a great place to spend a few hours away from the casinos. They offer a number of different wines that come from grapes grown right in Connecticut along with grapes from California. We got to try a number of different wines and even found a few we enjoyed. We left with our wine tasting glasses and we even bought a bottle of wine to bring home with us.
The Jonathan Edwards Winery is not a big winery. You won't spend more than a few hours here walking the grounds, looking at the wine making operation and tasting some wines. We got there about 1 in the afternoon and since it was early spring, the place was not very crowded at all. We took some time to walk through the small gift shop area and then to go through the self-guided tour of the wine making area. When the wine tasting was done for the group ahead of us, we went ahead and signed up. There are two options. For $10 you can taste four wines and for $20 you get to taste all seven of the wines that they had at the time we were there. You also get to keep your wine glass. We opted for the full service tasting.
Afterwards we took some time to walk the winery grounds, which are open to the public. I wish we had known since we could have brought a picnic lunch and enjoyed it on their back porch or in the vineyards
During the warmer months, the winery hosts a number of different activities from concerts to different tastings and stuff. When you are there, you can sign up for their email notification list and they'll send out notices of the events to you. You can also check out their events on their website. The website also lets you order more wine if you have a hankering for something you found there but can't get to North Stonington.
We had a really good time and considering all four of us aren't big wine drinkers, I think anyone would have a good time at the Jonathan Edwards Winery.
