This week, Jonathan Rhys Meyers landed in the hospital after a suspected suicide attempt. Paramedics had found Meyers slumped on the floor. They called the police after he refused treatment. Witnesses suspect that he had taken a number of pills.
It is unclear whether or not Meyers' condition was the result of a suicide attempt. According to an unnamed source, "This is very sad. It was the opinion of those present that he tried to take his life."
However, another report suggests that although he had been drinking heavily, he was not actually trying to kill himself.
Meyers is famous for his role on the TV series, "Tudors." The Irish actor also appeared in films such as "Velvet Goldmine," "Bend It Like Beckham," and "Match Point."
Meyers is fortunate to be alive after this suspected suicide attempt. Other celebrities have not been so lucky. Here's a look at a few famous figures who tragically took their own lives.
Alexander McQueen: In February 2010, the illustrious fashion icon committed suicide. His passing came just days after his mother's death and three years after the suicide of his close friend, Isabella Bow. Days before his suicide, McQueen had tweeted, "From heaven to hell and back again, life is a funny thing. beauty can come from the most strangest of places even the most disgusting places."
Ray Combs: The comedian's life went on a downward spiral after his game show, "Family Feud," failed to take off in 1994. He went on to suffer permanent spinal disc injuries from a car accident, experience financial problems, and experience the breakdown of his marriage. On June 1, 1996, he was checked into the psychiatric ward of the Glendale Adventist hospital in California. The next morning he hung himself using hospital bed sheets as a noose.
Kurt Cobain: On April 8, 1994, the grunge rocker was found dead in his Seattle home. His death was ruled to be a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. During the last years of his life, Cobain had struggled with heroin addiction as well as media pressures surrounding himself and his wife, Courtney Love. As he wrote in his suicide note, "I don't have the passion anymore, and so remember, it's better to burn out than to fade away."
Although his death was ruled to be a suicide, Love's private investigator believes that Cobain was murdered. He believed that the note was actually an letter stating his intention to leave Love, Seattle, and the music business.
Jonathan Brandis: On November 11, 2003, the former teen heart throb attempted suicide in his Wilshire Area Los Angeles apartment. A friend had called the police to report the attempted suicide. Brandis was taken to the hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
His friends reported that Brandis had begun drinking heavily and that he had become depressed when he experienced a career slump. Friends say he was disappointed when his appearance in the 2002 film "Hart's War" ended up on the cutting room floor. He had hoped this role would revive his career.
Dana Plato: The "Diff'rent Strokes" star's life and career took a nosedive after she was fired from the show in 1984. Since then, she experienced the death of her mother, the breakdown of her marriage, loss of custody of her son, troubles with the law, and substance abuse problems. On May 8, 1999, Plato was found dead in a mobile home outside her fiance's parents' house. Her death was ruled to be suicide caused by intentional overdose of painkillers.
We're glad that Jonathan Rhys Meyers has survived. Hopefully he is getting the help that he needs!
