Joran Van Der Sloot Confession: Will He Recant in Stephany Flores Case?

Joran van der Sloot recently confessed to killing Stephany Flores in Lima, Peru on May 30, five years to the day after Natalee Holloway disappeared while on a graduation trip with classmates in Aruba. What sets this case apart from the Holloway disappearance and probable murder is that van der Sloot was captured on hotel surveillance cameras with his victim entering his hotel room that fateful night. The evidence is there and appears to be solid. There should be no room for the Dutchman to recant his confession like he has done, often, in the case of Natalee Holloway.

Stephany Flores met Joran van der Sloot while at a poker tournament. The pair can be seen as they pass by one camera and again when they reach the Dutchman's room at 5 a.m. Saturday morning. Four hours later, van der Sloot is seen leaving his room alone.

Fox News and other media outlets have reported that he then walked across the street to a supermarket and bought two cups of coffee. When he returned, he found that she had used his laptop to find information about him (specifically, videos and photographs about the Holloway case) and his involvement in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Van der Sloot flew into a rage, grabbed Stephany Flores by the neck, and hit her.

Given the fact that Joran van der Sloot has a history of confessing and recanting in regard to the Holloway case, it stands to reason that he could try it again in the Flores case.

Joran van der Sloot is a long way from Aruba where it is likely his father (who has since passed away) used his position and influence as a respected lawyer to sway the investigation in favor of his son. His father was arrested in June 2005 on suspicion of involvement in Holloway's disappearance but was released three days later.

It should come as no surprise when I say Aruban police bungled the investigation into the Holloway disappearance from the beginning. Joran van der Sloot should have never been allowed to remain at large and for that, Aruban officials have to shoulder some of the responsibility for Stephany Flores' death.

Without the help of his father, alone in a foreign country, there is finally hope that Joran van der Sloot will be brought to justice. Peruvian law enforcement officials are being careful to make sure all their ducks are in a row as they proceed with their investigation into Flores' murder.

Something that really struck me was when Flores' father spoke about how his daughter's death may also bring some justice for the Holloway family. That was very gracious of him to say. The two families, although miles apart, are bonded together by their tragedies at the hands of the same man, even if that man never owns up to having ended the young life of Natalee Holloway.
