At the very least, one would think that Mrs. Van der Sloot would wonder why her son set up an extortion plot to extort $250,000 dollars from the grieving mother of Natalee Holloway in exchange for information on her death and whereabouts of her remains.
Even if her son did not commit the murders, does it not disturb her on some level that her son is one step shy of a sociopath who could, with zero conscience take dirty money from a grieving mother? It's simply too hard to fathom.
In an email sent to ABC News, Anita van der Sloot says she will not give any interviews or information to American news outlets because she "does not trust them." She then goes on to say that her son is "depressed, traumatized and has an addiction. He is not a murderer. It stinks and feels like a big trap set up for him."
As a mother it is often difficult to think that the children we love and give our lives to could turn into people that we have not raised them to be. I would not be surprised to learn that Mrs. Van der Sloot was a good mother who gave her son the best that she had to give. We all do. Unfortunately, at times, our children do something to disappoint us or they make decisions that we cannot fathom they could make. As painful as that may be, this are sometimes the harsh realities of raising children.
As much as I feel bad for Mrs. Van der Sloot, she would do well to refrain from the co-dependent enabling of her son. If he has a gambling addiction and she wants to help him, she should know that one of the hallmark characteristics of addiction is denial and shifting of blame.
He has an addiction alright, but I don't think it's gambling.
