Jose Canseco Embarrassed by Vai Sikahema in Celebrity Boxing Match

Former Steroid User Doesn't Make it Past First Round

Gary Davis
Mike Barron of The Post Chronicle reports that Jose Canseco, Major League Baseball's storied steroid user took on Vai Sikahema late of the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League and current sportscaster purportedly in a Celebrity Boxing Match. Of course Canseco was called "Baseball's Bad Boy" and claimed to have a martial arts background as well as being in good shape. Sikahema was also in good shape and had 80 amateur fights; it was obvious he had the better background.

The 45-year-old Sikahema standing at 5-foot-9 appeared to be an underdog to Canseco who is 44-years-old and is 6-foot-4; wrong. Barren goes on to report Sikahema immediately charged Canseco and had knocked him down twice when the fight was stopped early in the first round; an embarrassment for Canseco who had been making gestures towards Sikahema's corner prior to the fight. He had been slashing his finger across his throat; it was in very poor taste considering the nature of the fight and thereby enraged the crowd.

The ease with which Sikahema won prompted him to utter this quotable quote: "He's a very impressive looking guy...but the guy is a walking corpse because he's rotted inside out. He's a pathetic figure"

Canseco, desperate for cash these days garnered $35,000. Sikahema got $25,000 but he gave away part of it to the family of Philly Police sergeant Stephen Liczbinski who was killed in the line of duty during a bank robbery.

There was actually very little interest in the fight reports the Chronicle article. The 5,000 seat stadium only had about 1,250 people; certainly a very small crowd for what should have been somewhat of an interesting event.

Sikahema immediately established his dominance over Canseco from the opening bell despite his inferior height. A punt return specialist and running back, he was obviously the more effective boxer and also was in better shape. It certainly made one question Canseco's claim to a martial arts background.

Throughout the fight the crown was raucous cheering for Sikahema.

One has to wonder if Canseco's steroid use played any role in his inferior physical shape as well as his pompous attitude and failure to endear him to the fans.

So according to Mike Barron of The Post Chronicle the net report goes something like this. Vai Sikahema beat Jose Canseco in a Celebrity Boxing Match; but good.

With the experience of 80 fights in the ring on one side against zero in the other, there was never any doubt how this would turn out.

Is Canceso a likeable guy? No. Is he the only one telling the truth about baseball players juicing? Yes.

We Philly folks would have predicted the outcome of this fight correctly. RS
