Joseph P. Kennedy 3rd, Grandson of RFK Won't Run for Congress

Since 1946 a member of the Kennedy family has served in Washington. Joseph P. Kennedy 3rd, 29, Democrat from Massachusetts had been urged by family and Democrats to continue the family tradition by running for the US House of Representatives. He has decided not to.

Joseph P. Kennedy 3rd is the son of former Massachusetts congressman, Joseph P. Kennedy 2nd and the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, former presidential candidate, NY senator and attorney general. He is grand nephew of former president John F. Kennedy and the late Massachusetts Senator, Edward "Ted" Kennedy. He has a twin brother Matthew Rauch Kennedy.

He is 29, and a resident of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He presently works as a prosecutor/district attorney in Barnstable County court, a position he has held for 8 months. He is a graduate of Sanford University and Harvard Law School and has sterling credentials.

Democratic insiders as well as family and friends see in Joseph Kennedy 3rd, the promise of another legacy of elected Kennedy statesmen and hope he will begin a political career. He has none of the personal problems that have tormented some other Kennedy family members and has a strong interest in human rights and economic development.

The young district attorney was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic. He worked on environmental and tourist issues. He was featured in a recruitment video for the Peace Corps. He is personable and attractive. He was also editor of the Harvard Human Rights Journal and co-founded a youth-at-risk program in a Boston Public School.

This fourth generation member of the Kennedy family had seriously entertained the thought of running for the 10th District seat in Congress, but eventually told the Associated Press he decided to remain in his new job as prosecutor/assistant district attorney. "I know serving in Congress would be a great job, but I have a great job now."

Once there were three Kennedys in Congress at the same time.....Senator Edward M(Ted) Kennedy who died last year...Massachusetts Representative Joseph P Kennedy 2nd (young Joe's father) who served six terms before leaving to work for Citizen's Energy, a low cost heating oil program for homeowners; and Representative Patrick Kennedy (Ted 's son) who was Representative from Rhode Island for 8 terms.

Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island recently announced that he was not seeking a ninth term citing that his career was taking him in new directions. With him gone and young Joe Kennedy 3rd not running for office, the Kennedy era in politics is now probably over.

Good article. Interesting because I've grown up with them. They have been through a lot.

This family has gone thru so much, I can hardly blame them.

Unusual for a Kennedy not to be represented.

I think the Dems see the handwriting on the wall!

It already feels strange that there are no Kennedys in politics anymore. I felt it right after Teddy died, and they his son Patrick said he wouldn't run, either. Perhaps this generation just doesn't have an older group to spur them on and they're just not going to do it!

Maybe so, but then again, there are probably some in the wings.

I'm sure we haven't seen the last of the Kennedy's in politics.

Very interesting article. Kind of sad but I love looking backward too much. All good things come to an end and besides he is very young and still has time.

He needs to follow his heart and do what makes him happy. He shouldn't run for office just because of family tradition!
