Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho (or Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho) is a Negro spiritual dates from before the Civil War. Slaves often wrote songs that expressed their desire for freedom, as this one does. It refers to the Biblical passage found in Joshua 6:15-21, with the final line of the refrain, "And the walls came tumbling down though to them it signified to them a deeper meaning.

About the Battle of Jericho
The Bible's account of the Battle of Jericho described in Joshua 6:1-27 was the first battle of the Israelites in their conquest of Canaan. According to the story, the walls of Jericho fell after Israelite army marched around the walls of the city blowing their rams horns (trumpets).

"And seven priests shall bear seven rams' horns before the ark; and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the horns. And it shall be, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the horn, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat..." Joshua 6:4-5
