Joshua and the Last Day of Summer

Kristin Hawkins
Joshua and Jlanda were at a local pizza place in the middle of Washington D.C. It was the day before Joshua had to leave for the country of Rhukashlavia. It was nearly the end of August at the time.

"Three months go by so quickly," said Jlanda.

They were sitting down waiting for their pizza to arrive.

"Yes, they do," replied Joshua. "I can't believe it myself. It seems like only yesterday that I had just arrived back to the States. We must be faithful to our duties, though. You must finish grad school, while I must keep up my work in the palace."

"I... I'm gonna miss you," said Jlanda sadly.

It was at that moment that Jason and Memphis immediately entered that same pizza place. They quickly walked over to where Joshua and Jlanda were sitting. This made Joshua somewhat nervous, because, in Joshua's mind, Jason was a little overbearing for a journalist.

"We want to say goodbye, too!" said Jason. "We heard that you were leaving tomorrow!"

"And who told you about that?" asked Joshua in a more serious tone.

"Well... no one actually told us that," replied Jason. "I might have done just a little eavesdropping."

Joshua sighed and rolled his eyes.

"Oh well, then! I should've expected that one," replied Joshua. "I suppose I shouldn't choose to be rude and ignore it. You did come all this way... I guess."

"Uh..." began Memphis. "Jason made us follow you and Jlanda."

"How did I...?" began Joshua. "How in the world did I miss that?"

"It was really crowded," replied Memphis.

"Oh, right," replied Joshua. "Well, since that's done and over with, I will say my goodbyes to the both of you. Keep... working hard, Jason. And you...take care, Memphis."

"Can we join you?" asked Jason. "You know... one last meal before you leave?"

"What do you think, Jlanda?" asked Joshua. "Should we allow these two gents to join us in what was supposed to be a more special moment over food?"

"Hmmm," began Jlanda. "You know, yeah. They aren't actually doing a news story over you. I guess it's okay!"

"Is that true, gentlemen?" said Joshua as he turned back to Jason and Memphis.

"Yeah," replied Jason. "We have other work outside of being in a pizza place."

Jason took a seat beside Joshua.

"Memphis?" asked Joshua.

"He's telling the truth," replied Memphis.

He sat down beside Jason.

"Good," replied Joshua.

It was at that time that Joshua and Jlanda's pizza had finally arrived.

"Sir," said Joshua. "May you please supply these two men with the drinks of their choice along the pizza of their choice. It's all on me."

"Yes, right away," said the server.

The server took their orders. He then went to fetch the food ordered by the journalist and his cameraman.

"You really did that... for us?" asked Jason.

"Well, yes," replied Joshua.

"Thank you!" replied Jason.

Memphis said the same.

"Yes," said Jlanda. "Thank you, Josh!"

The evening became a pleasant one for all of them. At the end of the day, Joshua walked Jlanda back to her apartment. He walked back to his own apartment soon afterwards. He then left early the next day for the palace of Rhukashlavia.
