Omaha is Home to Many Paintings and Sculptures by American Artists
Mary Cassatt : Woman Reading
Mary Cassatt is the most famous female Impressionist artist. Known for her paintings of women and children. She often portrayed mothers and their relationships with their children in her work.
Jackson Pollock: Galaxy
Known as an abstract painter his style of painting with liquid paint and having it splatter, drip and pour onto the canvas may not seem like art to some but he was a leader in the abstract expressionist art movement. Later in his career he began numbering his paintings instead of naming them so the viewer could search for what the painting meant to them without having a preconceived notion thrust upon them by the title.
Ansel Adams: The Tetons and the Snake River
Ansel Adams black and white photography is found not only in museums but also on coffee mugs, calendars, books and even computer screen savers. A commercial and critical success his photography is featured in numerous books.
John Woodhouse Audubon: Barn Owl
The son of famous artist John James Audubon. John Woodhouse Audubon was an excellent wildlife painter but never could fully emerge out from under the shadow of his famous father.
Dale Chihuly : Glowing Gemstone Polyvitro Chandelier
Most notable for his glass sculptures Dale Chihuly's art is featured in museums and universities around the world. Known for the intense and vibrant colors and some for their massive size the two featured Chihuly sculptures at the Joslyn are certainly a sight to behold.
Winston O. Link: Hot Shot Eastbound at Leager , West Virginia
Link is easily the premier photographer or steam locomotives. With photography being a passion since he was in high school his talent is not easily surpassed. His work is featured in many museums across the country as well as a museum in Roanoke, Virginia named after him and featuring his work. The Winston O. Link museum opened three years after his death in 2004.
George Sugarman: Yellow Ascending
You can't miss this 30 foot high sculpture on the lawn of the Joslyn Art Museum. George Sugarman is known for his vividly painted metal sculptures. He was one of the innovators of pedestal free sculpture that was freestanding. He was also a painter but he is most recognized for his large scale colorful sculptures.
Andrew Wyeth: Half Bushel
Having recently passed away in January of 2009 surely many will go to the museum to view Wyeth's representational art. One of the most famous realists painters his art also hangs in New York City's Museum of Modern Art.
