For those who haven't heard of Joss Whedon he first stepped onto the small screen back in 1997 with a little show called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Many thought the show (picking up where the movie left off) would be gone after its first season. Surprisingly the series quickly picked up a loyal fan base that enjoyed the story lines, plot twists, and unique characters.
In 1999 fans got another treat in the form of a spin off to the series entitled "Angel". Another series many thought doomed to failure as Joss Whedon created a show based around Buffy's leading man and a few other Sunnydale characters. Following the example of Buffy the Vampire Slayer the new series soon picked up its own loyal fan base and quickly joined Buffy as a cult classic.
With two hit series to his name Joss Whedon created another series for Fox shortly after his show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, left the WB and began being aired on the Fox Network owned UPN. This new series, Firefly, was set in a hazy future in a world that was controlled by the combined powers of the United States and China, the last two super powers. The setting for this new world was a combination sci-fi, western, society with a great deal of action and adventure.
While many fans were skeptical of this departure from the comfortable vampire slayer, demon hunting, story lines Firefly's fast pace and interesting plots soon gained its own following. Sadly even with its growing fan base Fox chose to cancel the series after only one season. Disappointed but not discouraged fans continued to discuss and promote Firefly and soon the Sci-Fi network picked up the show broadcasting the single season to thousands of eager fans.
The fans weren't the only ones who were interested in the futuristic series. Universal Pictures decided that a big screen adaptation of the television series wouldn't be a bad idea. Years later "Serenity" is ready to hit the big screens and eager Joss Whedon fans are buzzing with anticipation. After seeing a preview screening I cannot disagree with the die hard fans.
Fast action, great humor, and wonderful plot developments make this a must see for anyone that enjoys a great space movie or a wonderful western.
