Inconsistency is frustrating. I would like to thank everyone for the prayers, help and friendships. I have been living every day as focused on God as I could and living each day as my last day because of how it has helped me realize how important each and everyone of you is.

This, in fact, is being posted on Facebook page for my friends without e-mail. The point of inconsistency I am frustrated about is my run times, though. I need prayer for tomorrow. I am running a 5K and it is something I have never done. All my running I do means nothing because it was for enjoyment, and even though I timed them all, this is different. I hear there are positions for the 5K, and I have taken to running like my wrestling. If I am going to take time doing it, then I want to finish 1st or at the top. I would be disappointed with anything else. I ran 14 miles today, and after the 12th mile, my body slowed up and instead of 13-15 minute two mile laps, it was a long 2-mile lap. I was very upset with that because I had the 12 mile done in 1hr 29 minutes. It made me finish the 14 miles in 1hr 53 minutes. That was the worst two mile I had ever run.

I know that I will be upset if I don't do well in that 5K tomorrow. I would like for people to pray that I accept what ever God brings me for this 5K. I have been on edge on Sunday and today because I am scared of not doing well. I have never done a 5K before. I know that those of you who know me well understand how I feel about my running. It is an important part of my life, and I don't like falling away from those things I consider important to me. For me, running is a personal testimony of Christ and what He has done in my life. When I run, I think about the trials of my life. I run for long times because I remember the good and the bad things in my life. I have never held secrets from my friends, brothers, and sisters. I love you all as family, and I need prayer support and maybe some words of encouragement. If I do nothing else in life, then I would like to know that I kept God first, treated every friend with the love of Christ, tried my best to stay in shape, and did well in school. I am nothing without God, and I can't do this without His help.

It is really not significant to anyone, and I would not expect anyone to understand my passion for running and fighting. It is my passion... I remember Justin Balch asked me what it was I wanted most in life. It wasn't money, women, or anything this world could provide. I just want to be close to God and strive to finish strong. Running is a part of finishing strong. This is something I really want more than anything. I am hoping to start getting really good at running so I can get into some competitions too. I am not good enough until I can do the small things well. This 5K is the first step to me putting one foot before the other, and it will help me to have an understanding of being patient and letting God lead me one step at a time.

When I was injured, I had to crawl before I could walk. They had me doing 5-10 minutes of Physical Therapy and then ice. It kept slowly getting longer and more intense. Each day I felt pain. I went home and cried because I used to run and play sports a lot before I got injured. When I finally got back into running, I started running a few feet at a time. I had then run for 5 minutes. Once I got back together and was allowed to run, I had run for 4 laps. I, finally, PT tested and failed. People treated me like I was always injured and not worth much. I kept focused on God and refused to give up on myself, and I almost did. I know the Christian friends and my other close friends and family were also praying for me. I don't deserve to do well in this 5K tomorrow, but I pray that I do. I worked hard for it, but God has already done so much for me. Doing well would really not change whether or not God loves me. I realize this, but I want to glorify God with this victory. David faced his giants, and this is one of my giants. I have gone from 5 minute runs to 1-5 hr runs. I have already been able to praise God for that, and I am happy for it. But I have got to try hard on this 5K. Maybe after this, I will do some marathons. Please pray for me. I want to do well tomorrow and that is all. This is really important to me. I will be running at 800 in the morning if anyone wants to be there to support this run. Of course, I know a lot are you are busy, but it would mean a lot if someone was there. Praise God for what He has already done. I know that I won't be alone tomorrow though. God will be there, and I will give Him glory whether I finish first or last. Thank you for your support.

Day of My First Competitive Run

I hear the air of my apartment sitting still as I awake. I awake at 300 with anticipation. My body is praising God and joyful before the day even starts and before I am even able to fully wake up. I try to fall asleep again, but my body turns me over until it is 400... I couldn't over sleep my alarm if I tried to because my body was so excited and ready to run. I don't know how I will do, but I do know that my heart is pounding in its chest. This is a good feeling. I have, recently, not felt this excited about hardly anything. I only get this excited when I am getting ready to cook a nice meal for someone, I get to write, I get to teach, I dive in for heavy research, I can actively help someone with work, I get an opportunity to serve God... Ah wait... The excitement is how I always am when I am doing something I really want to do. As of recent, the only strong excitements I have had was serving God, school, the Art museum, and preparing for this run. As frustrated and on edge as I was in preparing for this run, it is worth it if this pain and strain pays off. Then I can start doing bigger races like the 10K Kylie told me about in a few weeks. I would have never thought about racing and entering runs if it weren't for Kylie, Nicole Stallard, Adam Obest, Alimayo Arango, Benjamin Loo, Aldrich Cleark, Justin Newton, Justin Balch, Okpara Kelly, my Mom, Farid Awad, Mike Moss, Tai, Stewy, and the Woodsons, and a few Army and Marine friends from a time ago. I look at God and asked if He would be there when I fell down. I had a thirst for His help when I was in pain. I have come a long way from when I had been injured. God was there with His people supporting, leading, and many others praying for me. When I was alone, and the world came down on me, God had taken His hand and healed my brokenness while guarding me from being crushed by the world. As I fall asleep, I realize that God was always there in the warmth and in the cold. God was the one that made who I was. I realize that I am more than a man and my flesh is really just a guise. I am one of God's children, and He loves me as His own. Who am I but a servant of God to do His will? God was there for me and sent His people or others at the right time to let me know and encourage me.

Kylie was always there telling me about other runs and races. A few times we ran together too. I wish he was around longer. But we will be able to run together today when the run starts. Nicole had mentioned it a few times too. These two friends constantly said things about the 5K runs and Kylie went further to even offer to pay for me to enter a marathon with him. It did not go through, but despite what others said, I wasn't ready then. Adam Obest had look at me as a friend when I was recovering and he told me that I was out of shape and needed to get back into shape. I was already working on it. But it encouraged me to run day and night and eat extremely healthy even though I was doing so much. This made me not just get fast results, but it gave me long lasting behavioral changes. Natasha Obest and "Super Size Me" had showed me how awful fast food was, and I rarely eat that stuff even on my cheat day, and when I do, I am generally careful about what I get looking at what is the better options calorie wise. Alimayo and Anaro Arango had always pioneered healthy living. I look up to them when I was younger. They are my brothers, and I have listened to their advice to aim towards the goals that I wanted for the military and my health. My Aunt Susan had taught me that if you are going to do something, than do it right. Jose Arango, my stepfather had taught me about persistence and being determined for what you really want. I will never give up unless God wants me to. Benjamin Loo and Aldrich Cleark were always there to encourage me and listen when I needed to talk to someone. Through basketball games and gym partners they have had helped me stay encouraged with their attitudes of invitation and encouragement. In fact, Jeter too in the same fashion has given encouragement. These people believed in me when I didn't think I could do well. One time I was running on the track and Justin Newton ran from behind me and passed by me on the 2-mile track. He was a friend also. Seeing his ability let me know that even though I was there, where I wanted to be physically, there was always better. The others, it would take forever to say a lot of things they have done.

However, I just know that when I sent out the first e-mail about how important this was to me, Justin Balch and Farid Awad called me up wished me well, and let me know that they were praying for me. My brother Okpara and I have had our differences, but he has actually given a lot of encouragement in my quest for fitness. I know Mike and Debbie have been praying for me in many things and very helpful. The Woodsons, Tai, and Stewy have always been encouraging too, every time I speak to these friends, it is refreshing. Nicole and I talked about the run also and said that she was praying for me too. Why should I gain for Christ sacrifice for me? I don't even deserve these few friends I have. Yet, I have them. I reflect and think of all of the good times I had with all of my friends. I had given up on doing things for myself, and the reward was worth more than gold. Whose wisdom would make a person sacrifice to help others? I did not want anything except to serve God, be a good friend, and not give up on my life.

This may just be a short run, but for me this is a way to see what I have sacrificed for a time come to yield a reward. This is one of the few things that I am doing both for God and myself. Jesus I glorify you God, and my victory is in you. Thank you for all of the encouragement my friends. Being there is more important than gifts because I can always buy what I need, but a person can't buy love, respect, or friendship. These things are earned, gained, or given. There are a few friends that I have known for only a few weeks. You all have enriched my life recently making the few days before the run less stressful. I didn't even think about the run into I measured my times on Saturday and Monday. I had a great birthday, and I have been enjoying life. I am ready now to run. I hope to finish first or do well. Praise God that I can even run though. I will let you all know how it goes. BTW: Thank you Kylie and JNew for being there for me on the day of the run. Even though God is there, it means a lot that some friends will be there while I run.

My Results:
I finished in 2nd place in the 5K. Praise God... I got a time of 20:28 and the person in front of me 19:04. I was in 1st for about half of the race, but I lost track and tread on the turn around. I am thankful to God for the run. I also thank everyone for praying for me and all. I know it mattered.

What I Have Learned...

I glorify God, and that is because I knew that I would not do well without Him. So what have I learned from my first 5K race that I can take onto Kinston if I am able to make it out there. The Kinston run is 29 Mar 2008; I plan to be ready if it is God's will for me to run. I will glorify God and keep Him first. Support and encouragement from my friends is needed. I will carb stack since that helped during this run. A winning attitude and good sportsmanship is needed coupled with humility. I need to know the route well. Finally, a good pace must be maintained. About the Kinston race, it is soon.

The Kinston race is called the Kinston 8000 Run for the River. It is Saturday, 29 Mar 2008 at 900 AM and the 1 mile fun run is at 830 AM. It is in cooperation with Kinston-Lenoir County Parks & Recreation. The race is $500 for 1st, $300 for 2nd, and $150 for 3rd. The top three male and female finishers in different age groups will receive $50 awards. I think it is $15 to enter. I am calling them up after I send this out. I will definitely need God.

I must keep God first in this race. I will glorify Him no matter what, but I am going to try my best to do great. I can't do this without God. I was not supposed to walk, and I am reminded of that. My foot was in pain before this race, and it healed up in enough time for me to do good during the 5K. That was all God because I went to bed unsure of whether I was going to make it today. One thing that encouraged me to trust was the support of my friends.

God speaks through His children. I knew that Jenn was in my corner. All of the people I thanked were ones that came up to me right afterwards. In fact, I am trying to get someone to come up to Kinston with me this Saturday. The praying with Justin Newton before the race was great help. Kylie running with me was encouragement. Jen's birthday cake helped out too which I will get into with the carb stacking. Farid, Justin B, Nicole, and all of those people that prayed with or for me. Thank you... And I especially thank you too Jen. We have only known for a short time, but you have done a lot as a friend too. Thank you all for the support. I also need to make sure I prepare my stomach.

It is said that an army marches on its stomach and belly. It is the same for a runner. I read some things about carb stacking before I ran. It is said that it is not good to eat heavy the day of the run, and it is not good to eat at the wrong times the day before. I used the Birthday cake that Jen made for me to eat throughout yesterday because it was a good source of carbs. Later that night, I ate 4 boiled eggs and drank a ½ of glass of wine. I also made sure that I drank lots of water. The next day, I felt full but not stuff. It was just enough for me to get away with special K bars, thirst gum, and water until the run was over and I immediately got a detour bar. Jen also prayed for me too so she helped out more than she knew.

I need to enter with that winning attitude, for it would be bad if all these people mentioned above put their prayers up for me and I did not try hard myself. One should not ask for help unless they truly want to try to meet the goal that they set for themselves. People invested time to pray for me. I was running for God. I could not give up or go in with a losing and defeated attitude. I trained hard, and I set myself up. When the race started, I thought out every action just as a champion aiming for victory and nothing less. That thought process helped me get through the run. Even if I fell back three people I was going to shoot for first and not stop until I crossed the finish line. I finished with a time of 20:28 because I focused on God and my pace. I even made sure I walked up and congratulated the winner. Good sportsmanship and humility is key. He did better than I did and deserved the win. I knew when I got to the race that he was going to be my challenge, for I could see it in his eyes. Excuse the pun but he had the eye of the tiger. I could see the determination. The most awesome thing I saw was the woman that had her baby in a stroller and finished the race. She didn't finish high, but she did well. She won because she met her goals. I felt a sense of humility and awe when I saw this lady pacing the finish line and going fast with a baby stroller. It's not where you finish, but it is how you finish and whether you met your goals. It was a beautiful thing to see others meeting a goal and seeing the smile on their face as they crossed the finish line. I could have had a better start if I knew the route too.

I set a goal to start strong and finish strong. I did not start strong. I did not understand the route correctly until I ran it. That was a major issue for me. I was conditioned, but I wasn't mentally prepared. I can not let that happen next time. It really affected my pace.

Of course, I maintained a good pace, but there were two times I switched pace and lost pace. I lost the first place because of this issue. Next time, I need to do better at tracking my pace. I had the attitude and conditioning, but I had no understanding of the route. It cost me first place. If I am going to compete, then I need to work on a pace that is competitive and know my route. The run was fun though, and I enjoyed competing.

Competing had made me become a little bit better. It has increased my confidence and trust in Christ also. I am ready for the Kinston Race this Saturday. I just need to try to register to enter it. I will keep God first. The support of my friends and the Church is needed. Food must be well prepped the day before and after. I must have the "eye of the tiger". I need to know what I am doing and where I am going, so I can start and finish strong. Finally, I will set a good pace for myself. Praise God for the strength He has given me. I want to glorify God in all I do.

Showing Me What It Is To Hope

I could not sleep today. Not one bit did receive. I tried to go to bed last night, and I slept a little from 001-300. My body had said for me to wake up. I got up and stretched, and then I prayed and read and prayed and contemplated. I was supposed to rest today, but I couldn't just rest and lift. I heard the road calling my name; I ran up to Berkeley using Ash and started sprint up and down it doing aerobics and fast runs for about 45 minutes for a total of 10 times.

I was hoping to be too tired, but it did the opposite to me. So I ran down Summit and Ash back to my apartment. But I did not feel good about leaving it at that. I was unsure about the 8K this weekend at Kinston. So, I quickly turned around instead of resting and ran up to the Oak Forest Gate.

Of course, I couldn't leave well enough alone, so I ran the track by Oak Forest Gate. I ran until it ended, and then I ran back to Oak Forest Gate. I was thinking about a lot of things as I ran. I realize how thankful I was for each friend and for different reasons that I could write about forever in great detail. I had enough time to pray for every friend on that road. It was not in great detail, but the details flew through my mind about how awesome God has been, and how each friend brings glory to God without even realizing it. I wasn't sure still about the 8K, and I feel that it would be bad to ask people to pray for me if I was not sure myself.

The unsure thoughts led me to the gym track and the gym. I ran the end of the two-mile up to the gym and went back to the elliptical and ran for 6 minutes, and then I went back outside sprinted to the track, ran the quarter mile, and did the 2-mile. From there I started to run by base housing and the child care center outside of the Berkeley Gate and down Ash St. to my apartment. It took 4hrs and 2 minutes. But I had hope afterwards.

I am still going to train hard tomorrow for the 8K on Saturday, but the hope was that I knew that God was awesome. I always know and realize this, but to be in awe of it and really be taken back by it is different than just knowing. As I ran, beautiful flowers fell from the sky on to my head. The white and violet leaves smelled so wonderful. I had another hope. As a Christian, I am free to live, die and serve and always have a victory. As an American I have the freedom to be a Christian without dying for it. That freedom to run helps me also realize that. Let me live, let me die, let me serve, let me free, it is never about me, but it is about all things being in subjection to Christ. I am just a runner trying to finish the race and never give up. My strength is found in Christ. It is awesome because it feels like Christ is running with me win I run. I am at even more peace then I regularly have. The pain from the run feels good because it goes away. But the more I run and the longer I run the less pain I feel each day. How would I be without the support of God? What movement could I make without friends praying for my well being? Let us all be metal on metal until the day of Christ's return to take us home and take what it His, and this is my hope, praise God and bless you all. Showing me what it is to hope again is what God does.

Prepared for the Kinston 8K Saturday

Your prayers are working, and the support is much appreciated. I have a person to drive me and take pictures. That person will also take my time on the 3 mile run tomorrow for my practice at 600 AM. Your prayers have been instrumental in my successes today. I did a 1 mile run in 5 minutes, and I cleared 8 miles in 51:45 minutes. I, finally, have things together for the plans made. I prayed about everything each step of the day too. God first, is the most important principal of all in these things. I talked to Kylie about the plans, and we are going to set it all in motion. God is awesome. I choose God always, for there is no way this could have been done without Him. The race starts at 900 if anyone wants to come and see it. Win or lose I will definitely praise God. I have gotten too far to not trust in Him. As said before, nothing would be possible without God. I need Him now to be the fire on my feet and the fuel in my body. A goal to try to win seems attainable with my times, but I am going to have to try my best and blow myself out to do it. Let God lead my steps tomorrow and during the race.

The Kinston 8K Results & F.O.R.: H.I.M.

Training and pacing day after day, and it came to this one day. I was happy going through the 8K, but for me, there was more to it. It was not just a race; it was my chance to glorify God. I did my best and gave it my all. I started off the start line way too fast, but I still kept going. Through each pull, I went through constant pain, but I kept trying. I did not want to give up. My conditioning for the race had helped me stay in play even though I shot off too fast.

I have been sending out so many emails asking for prayer and telling people how important it was. Generally, I don't like asking for help, but I knew that I needed God's help, and I knew that I needed the support of others. My friends Justin Newton and Kylie also ran with me. Justin finished ahead, and I finished with a time around 34-36 minutes. Kyley finished right behind me. My pedometer read 5 miles on it too. I don't know what my actual time was because, at the end, I just focused on finishing, and when I was done I got on my knees and prayed to God before I stopped my watch to be faithful and give Him glory. I couldn't have done this without God's help. God was more important than an exact time.

I have more races that I am going to try now. This was just the beginning. Now, I am starting a Fraternity of Runners. Our only purpose is to be a family of runners and keep God first. Fresh Ground Ministries and Woodard and Co Apartments in Goldsboro, NC will be sponsoring us. We will call ourselves High Intensity Metal. This is because the group will not only have encouraged spiritual focus on Christ first, but it will be brothers sharpening brothers like metal. We will also have a few sisters in the group even though it is a fraternity. Our group will be called H.I.M.... Our first prospective members will be Yusun Y. Beck #777, Kyley Bolles #87, Justin Newton, Mike Witney, Rich Baltero, Stacy Parker, and Chad Trujillo. The number 1 is reserved in memory of Christ and His run here on earth. Without His sacrifice on the cross, none of us would be free. God always deserves the most honors. I am looking at inviting Adam Obest who is one of my best friends because I know that he is a runner. Finally, a charter will be completed, and shirts will be made.

Kyley and Rich may start their own fraternity in Korea. One in Osan and one in Kunsan will be started most likely. We will hopefully grow like wildfire and glorify God in the run. I believe that it was Paul that used racing to explain the Christian walk. It is our group that will start a team and using racing to spread God's love and glory. It does not matter the walk of life or type of Christian you are. Everyone is invited to join if they can follow the charter and order a shirt to wear when they run. There will also be supporter shirts coming in. This is also an attempt to unify the Christian church and continue to get back to the basics. We are a body with a strong God. Why shouldn't we give it our all and reach for the stars. It is not our ability that will carry the weight, for God will give us the strength to be strong. God will be with us as we run, and God will be with us as we glorify His name. Kiowana is the next Goldsboro race that at least one or two of us will run. Our tag name will be "Lion's Heart Chapter". Praise God...
