People gathered all around the site of the crash to inspect what had happened. Steven was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit for close examination. Minutes passed by before Steven was able to talk again. It was not easy for him to tell the doctors what had exactly happened due to his mild concussions. Soon enough, he narrated to the doctors the incident that had happened, saying that he was a bit tipsy and was not paying much attention to the road. The doctors did some tests on him and were shocked to find out that Steven was internally bleeding and that it was life threatening. Apparently he was born with a rare inherited bleeding disorder in the blood that does not clot normally. He was diagnosed with Hemophilia B and if the bleeding disorder wasn't stopped in 5 hours, he would die!
The news of these findings came as a shock to Steven. He had never really gotten hurt before and never new that he had Hemophilia B. The medical group, led by Doctor Phillip Ramsey debated on what they could do to stop the bleeding. There was such little time and stopping the blood would be a great challenge. The only possible solution to clotting the blood was by transferring normal genes into his blood. Every doctor in the hospital room did not know how they would get the genes into his blood. These special genes could not be injected because they would melt through any needle they were squeezed through.
The Hospital room was filled with noise due to the little knowledge of the inexperienced doctors. Five minutes passed by when suddenly Doctor Ramsey thought of an idea. He announced to the doctors present that he and a crew of doctors would enter Stevens' body and physically deliver the substance into his blood. Only the bravest and more experienced doctors would be part of the crew.
Many questions were asked but Dr. Ramsey did not have time to answer all. He told them that he knew of an engineer who had created a shrinking device that could make them small enough to enter Steven.
From out of no where, Steven told the doctors that if they wanted to be able to move around his body easily, they would need to enter a shrunken submarine and Steven will need to snort it into his alveoli. One doctor asked why Steven would have to snort the submarine in and doctor Ramsey answered him that if Steven swallowed the submarine, the epiglottis would not allow it into the lungs and his body will do everything it can to expel them. According to him, Steven will choke then cough them out. The massive wound under the skin of his knee grew more painful. He begged the doctors to hurry up; he did not have much time to be saved.
Out the hospital room the doctors ran. The four of them had to lease a submarine. Dr. Matel, who was on the crew said that his good friend Captain Remo had one and that it was up for lease. There was a problem with the expenses of the crew. Who was going to pay for the submarine?
Doctor Ramsey called up the hospital and discussed with Steven his financial status. Steven told him that he would pay any amount as long as he survives.
The first thing that the crew did was rush to the engineer who owned the shrinking device. They explained to him that this machine would decide whether someone lived or died. After a few minutes of thinking and being proud of his creation, Jing Sung gladly approved of their request and even offered to help them.
The 5 of them zoomed to the docks where captain Remo was waiting alongside his Submarine. He was to be their Captain who would steer them through Stevens body. Two of the other doctors who were part of the crew were having second thoughts about going into Stevens body. They both had wives and kids waiting for them at home. If anything were to happen to them, their families would have to find a new means to survive. Doctor Ramsey explained to them that he too was scared. He told them how important a person's life is and if nobody tried to save him, their consciences would haunt them forever. The crew looked at one another and sighed. It was going to be a long day.
They all boarded the submarine and waited for the engineer to shrink them. After shrinking the submarine, Jing Sung drove the submarine back to the hospital where Steven was waiting.
With 2 Hours to go, Steven anxiously snorted the submarine and off they went. The submarine was drenched in mucus. Its windows were covered and captain Remo had no control of he submarine. It was carried of by air and drifted its way into the alveoli. They went from the nasal cavity, passed the tubules, into the bronchi, then to the bronchioles and finally, the alveoli, the place where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. From the alveoli, the submarine was sucked into the blood stream and captain Remo finally had control of his submarine. The mucus was washed of the windows and the doctors could finally see where they were. The blood stream was full of amazing things like Red Blood cells, Plasma and White Blood cells. After minutes of speculating the blood, the doctors noticed a shortage of White blood cells and platelets. Dr. Ramsey ordered captain Remo to follow the White blood cells. These Blood cells took them directly to where the Stevens blood was not clotting. His blood was low on fibrin and platelets. This was the main reason why the blood was not clotting. From out of no where, another problem occurred. Stevens body was fighting to expel us from his body. We, as foreign objects were not welcome into his blood stream. A strong current of blood rushed at our submarine, forcing it upward to the alveoli. Captain Remo being trained for these particular kinds of events quickly dropped the anchor. They were saved! It took a few minutes for the current to die down before they could lift the anchor and save Steven. The submarine sped through the blood and made its way back to the Stevens injury. Doctor Matel, seeing that there wasn't much time left, immediately loaded the torpedo with the normal genes that were to be fired at the injury. Upon reaching the site, captain Remo fired the cure and they all watched it dispersed into the injury. The Submarine was filled with excitement as their job was completed.
They Traveled back into the Alveoli and waited for Steven to exhale. After thirty seconds of no exhale, the crew started to think that he was dead. Alas, a strong gust of wind arrived and carried them of and out of Stevens body. Steven sneezed and the submarine was again covered in mucus. The engineer drove the miniature submarine back to the docs and was restored to its normal size. The crew hurried back to the Hospital to see if Steven was still alive. The 5 hours had passed, and the crew was silent. They were praying for Stevens recovery and that everything would be fine. Up the hospital stairs they ran, hoping that they would not need to bury anyone.
Stevens room slammed open and there he was, lying awake in bed. The Room was filled with joy, seeing that he was well meant so much to the doctors who had worked so hard. Steven thanked them all and was carefully driven back to his Apartment to rest. He was alive and fine all because of those five courageous men and that life threatening journey of theirs.
