Journey's Top Ten Songs

Ebie Harris
When people hear songs by Journey they usually fall into one of two groups. Either your a young kid and you kind of roll your eyes at the thought of this being called music or your a fan of the progressive rock group. Journey was formed in San Francisco in 1973. Herbie Herbert, former road manager of Santana, recruited Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon from Santana. He also recruited Ross Valory from the Steve Miller Band to form Journey. Rolie performed vocals and keyboards, Schon performed on the guitar and did vocals as well, and Valory did both bass and vocals. The original members were rounded out by Prairie Prince on drums and George Tickner on guitar.

The popularity of Journey soared in the late 70s and early 80s thanks to all of their power ballads and love songs. According to Journey's website, (http://www.journeymusic.com/pages/news/journey-dont-stop-believin), the track "Don't Stop Believin," is the top-selling track on iTunes history. This track has been downloaded more than three million times. Journey has undergone many changes throughout the years. They have broken up, reunited, and now they have some new band members. Jonathan Cain on keyboards, Arnel Pineda singing vocals, and Dean Castronovo on drums.

Journey has been going strong throughout three decades. With more than 23 albums to their credit it was hard to narrow down a list of their top ten songs. After carefully going through over a hundred Journey songs these are the ones that had a special meaning to me. In no specific order here are Journey's Top Ten Songs.

"Open Arms" Escape (1981)

This song was actually the theme to my 8th grade formal dance. It is just one of those songs that left a lasting impression on me far beyond the dance. The song is sweet and sincere. It was perfect for our 8th grade dance because it appears the song talks about "first love" and how you eventually drift apart and move on.

"Who's Crying Now" Escape (1981)

This is one of those songs that hits a chord with me. Its depressing at some points but you can not help but listen. To me its about the struggles we sometimes face in our relationships.

"Any Time" Infinity (1978)

I like how this song flows. Its very easy to listen to. Every time I hear it I imagine being in a car with the top down singing along. This song is known for having a slow beat. It was one of Journey's earlier hits.

"Don't Stop Believing" Escape (1981)

Personally I just love the lyrics to this song. This a very popular song by Journey; one that everyone has heard. The way the song flows it just gets stuck in your head. Numerous television shows and movies have used this song.

"Wheels In The Sky" Infinity (1978)

This song to means no matter what happens life will always go on; "the wheels in the sky keep turning." I believe that is a good motto to live by.

"Any Way You Want It" Departure (1980)

A catchy and fun song from Journey. To me it is about a guy singing about his relationship with a girl that he wants to hold onto.

"Faithfully" Frontiers (1983)

I heard this song in a movie once and ever since have been a fan. A handful of Journey's song have been used in movies. I think its really interesting how a particular song can really set the tone of the scene. For instance this particular song is extremely beautiful and romantic. This is one song we will continue to hear through the decades.

"When the lights go down in the City" Greatest Hits (2008)

This song is unique because it flows like it is written for each of us. We can all listen to it and imagine it being about our own city.

"Baby I'm leaving you" Trial by Fire (1996)

To me this song is just fun. If you pay close attention to the lyrics its almost comical because so many people go through this. How often are we in a relationship, but on a different page with our partner.

"Better Together" Generations (2005)

The meaning behind this song is great for anyone who has every struggled with getting others to accept their relationship. Its about young life that actually survives.
