Joy and Pain

Pat Arnold
I have known joy,

exuberant, exhilarating,bubbling over joy;

being a life portal for beautiful beings,

nurtured and formed inside of me.

Being mothered, by the genteel Southern lady,

a belle, who joyfully gave of herself for me.

Life-my muse, a gift each day,

the joy of seeing another day, sunrise.

Love-the joy to give and receive;

needing only a conduit to achieve lift-off.

In life, it is said that with joy comes pain,

often coming in showers, or in buckets of rain.

I have known pain- of which there seems no end.

The pain that envelopes my being,

it clamps on tightly,

releasing, then griping,

contracting, then manumitting.

Love loss, life loss,

letting go of a dream.

Slipping, then falling,

it's course never ending.

Joy and pain, somehow exist, on an equal plane,

like two sides of the same coin.

Mixed emotions that live within each of us.
