Juicing for Allergies

Erin Kilgour
Fructose is a natural sugar found in fruit, honey, and vegetables, and is widely used as a food additive. In juice fructose amounts vary because of the concentration of sugars (fructose, soribitol and glucose) and the type of fruit used along with its storage. Fructose malabsorption can be determined through testing and symptoms of fructose intolerance can often times be alleviated by removal of fruit juice from the diet.

In young children where juice is a main part of the diet, fructose intolerance is a concern. Juicing for allergies is often done in young children. Total restriction of fruit and juice is taken from their diet. Reintroduction then begins to discover their tolerance level to fruit so they can adjust the amounts back into their diets. One fruit that is good to use in reintroduction is grapes. Adults too, use this technique.

Step 1

Visit your physician to confirm that you are positive for fructose malabsorption. Your physician may perform a breath hydrogen response which challenges fructose. In a person with fructose intolerance relatively small doses of fructose will cause an increased breath hydrogen response. In the normal person there will not be a reaction or very small reaction.

Step 2

Remove fruit juice from your diet if you are positive. This will likely be enough to alleviate symptoms. In more severe cases, dietary seclusion of fructose, sucrose, and soribitol will be necessary. Discuss with your doctor the best ways to go about this. You may also want to meet with a nutritionist.

Step 3

Gradually re-introduce fruit with a fructose glucose ratio of 1:1 or less and low soribitol concentrations. This will allow you to determine your tolerance level. Once you have determined your tolerance level you should have no adverse reactions to fruit or juice intake, provided you stay within your tolerance level in consuming the fruit and juice. Skill
