Juicing: Ideas for What to Do with Leftover Carrot and Vegetable Juice Pulp
Cooking, Baking, Gardening, and Making Dog Food Out of Leftover Juice Pulp
Juice Pulp Can Be Used For Cooking Soups and Stews in the Crock Pot:
Soups and stews are my favorite use for vegetable juice pulp. This idea will work with pulp from carrot juice, beet juice, tomato juice, celery juice, or other vegetable juices. It doesn't matter if you combined juices or juiced a single vegetable; the pulp will work well either way.
We have a 6-quart crock pot that we use for making soups and stews. After I'm finished juicing, I cut up 2 potatoes and put them in the bottom of the crock pot. Next, I cut up an onion, 3-4 cloves of garlic, and a fresh carrot or two. Those all get added to the crock pot, along with 1-2 cups of leftover vegetable juice pulp. I then add either skinless boneless chicken, cubed chuck steak, or other beef. (Vegans and vegetarians can skip adding the meat, and the soup will turn out just fine.) Next, I add fresh cilantro, fresh parsley, and a teaspoon full of cayenne pepper. The last step is to pour in a can of chicken broth or vegetable broth. This recipe has limitless possible variations; you can add or subtract ingredients according to your preferences. If the stew contains meat, it needs to cook for at least 10 hours; times may vary depending on your crock pot settings. My crock pot has only two settings, "high" and "low". I usually cook it for at least 10 hours on the low setting. Before eating the stew, stir it well and examine the meat to be sure it is done.
Please note that juice pulp is susceptible to mold if it is left in the refrigerator for too long. I recommend using it promptly after you juice. If you know that you won't get to it within 24 hours, you can put it in the freezer for a few days, but I wouldn't recommend leaving it in the freezer long-term.
Juice Pulp Makes Good Dog Food:
My best friend and I were making carrot juice one day, and we accidentally dropped some of the juice pulp on the floor. Imagine our surprise when his Labrador retriever ran over to the pulp and ate every last bit of it. He even begged for more. Some dogs love vegetables, and they also don't seem to care whether it's vegetables or vegetable juice pulp they are eating.
Baking With Carrot Pulp:
Carrot pulp can be used in carrot cake, carrot muffins, and other baked goods. It might entail tweaking an existing recipe, but carrot pulp can be substituted for carrots in many carrot cake recipes.
Compost for gardens:
Juice pulp can be used as compost material for gardening.
Conclusion:
Don't let your vegetable juice pulp go to waste! These ideas will give you a starting point for some various ways that juice pulp can be used. I am sure you could think of other ways, too. I'm going to experiment w/carrot pulp. I'm going to cook it w/spices and then use it to cook a piece of turkey. It will be in a form of a stew. I will probably add a couple of potatoes and some sweet onions slices. I hope it comes out ok.
Great advice! (^;^) Didn't know dogs would eat carrots but they do have kind of a sweet taste. My cats love eating cooked beets and drinking cooled beet juice. Never tried feeding the the beet pulp before. I have found I can successfully replace raisins with carrot pulp in some recipes such as my raisin coffee cake--you just need to experiment and see what works.
Sounds so interesting. Love it!
