Julia Roberts Wears Antique Drapery to Eat Pray Love Tokyo Premier

Julia Roberts, the star of the new movie "Eat Pray Love" was in Tokyo recently to promote the film but she chose the wrong thing to wear when appearing at the premier. OMG! Yahoo! reports the Dries Van Noten dress that Julia wore to the Tokyo premier. This dress may have fit the character she portrays in the movie, but it came off looking more like antique drapery that belongs in a home with typical 1950's interior décor. You know the type, the greenish-gold colors in large patterns, sometimes brocade, that hang on large curtain rods in front of the living room picture windows. That thought alone seems garish, and the dress here fits that purpose perfectly. So, why would the Dries Van Noten dress fit the Liz Gilbert character better than Julia herself?

For one thing, Liz is not your secure, strong woman in the movie, though she attempts to appear to be so. Liz is constantly seeking validation from others for her existence as she travels around the world. The man she meets in Bali while traversing the East Indies makes her feel beautiful and special, but then don't men from this part of the world have the same view of women? On the surface they may seem to know how to boost a woman's ego but again, it is entirely superficial. Once the woman hears words of sweet talk, they only float on the surface of her real being. In Liz's case, her trip around the world could be a lot more exciting if she had done it for herself, not to seek validation from men. But back to that dress for a minute.

Created with straight lines and a much too large neckline, Dries Van Noten's 1950's drapery dress also contains splotches of orange, purple, and blue. The blue is primarily at the bottom of the dress, which tends to draw the eye downward. The Celine shoes that Julia wore are beautiful but mismatched to the dress, being a much brighter green. Julie would have been better off with a solid color emerald green dress with these shoes.

Based on the popular novel of the same title by Elizabeth Gilbert, "Eat Pray Love" is the story of a woman who is a writer but has a sense of dissatisfaction in her life. Liz is trying to get pregnant for one thing, but when she suddenly realizes that pregnancy is not all that it is cracked up to be she decides instead to travel around the world, something few women get to do in their lives. However Liz is the typical socialized into second-class-status type female, which is very obvious throughout the movie.

The movie sounds very blah, so in that light, the dress that Julia Roberts wore fits the character she portrays perfectly.
