Julianna Margulies Wins for The Good Wife at the 67th Golden Globe Awards
Starring in the Freshman Series The Good Wife, Margulies Wins Best Actress in a Television Drama
Julianna Margulies was nominated in good company for the 67th Golden Globe Awards
Because her category was filled with some of Hollywood's top actresses in high-profile shows, Margulies's Golden Globe win for her freshman CBS network series was impressive, especially against these nominees:
• Glenn Close ("Damages"): An actress equally at home on the small and large screens, Glenn Close gives "Damages," an FX original series, its razor-sharp edge. As veteran litigator Patty Hewes, Close goes after the big money and big corruption. As the show progresses, the cases get tougher and the stakes get higher.
• January Jones ("Mad Men"): On "Mad Men," the retro AMC original series that's definitely on the cutting edge, January Jones plays Betty Draper, the wife of advertising executive Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm. Through the Betty Draper character, Jones recreates the trials and tribulations of the suburban housewife of the 1960s. When asked about her black evening gown and diamonds on the soggy red carpet, Jones simply said "I tried to find something modern."
• Anna Paquin ("True Blood"): In the powerful HBO drama "True Blood," Anna Paquin plays Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid who lives in a world where a synthetic blood substitute called "Tru Blood" helps vampires keep their urges at bay. Sookie, who has telepathic powers, finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into a world filled with vampires and lust.
• Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"): As Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, Kyra Sedgwick leads a powerful cast in this TNT original series. Deputy Chief Johnson has a reputation for being able to close even the most difficult of cases.
Margulies and "The Good Wife" defeat the non-network nominees
In her first Golden Globe win, Julianna Margulies and "The Good Wife," a CBS network show, defeated the four other nominees, each of which appears on a non-broadcast station. Quietly elegant in a high-waisted black evening gown with a bright red top, Margulies thanked her bosses at CBS for "believing in the 10 o'clock drama," a subtle jab at NBC's recent problems with "The Jay Leno Show." After years on "ER," Margulies also is grateful to have returned to Prime Time. "I'm blessed to go to work every day," Margulies said during her acceptance speech.
Like other attendees at the 67th Golden Globe Awards, Margulies also wore a ribbon in support of the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.
