In case you never heard of Julie and Julia, here's how Julie Powell describes herself in her first blog entry, as a "Government drone by day, renegade foodie by night. Too old for theatre, too young for children, and too bitter for anything else, Julie Powell was looking for a challenge. And in the Julie/Julia project she found it. Risking her marriage, her job, and her cats' well-being, she has signed on for a deranged assignment.
365 days. 536 recipes. One girl and a crappy outer borough kitchen.
How far will it go? We can only wait. And wait. And wait.....
The Julie/Julia Project. Coming soon to a computer terminal near you."
Julie Powell commits herself to cooking every recipe in Julia Child's book Mastering The Art of French Cooking in one year. Her husband gives her the idea of blogging about "The Project" (what she names it) and the rest is history. The book focuses on Julie's life with fabricated entries about Julia Child's life based on Julia's letters. Julie fumbles though complicated recipes, gets passionate about things such as bone marrow, learns to live on butter, and all along has a great time with her quirky friends and her high school love husband. Although Julie is enamored by Julia Child, there was never any indication that Julia Child ever heard of Julie Powell. Nevertheless, Julie feels a connection to Julia and mourns her loss on her blog when Julia Child passed away. "The Project" centers and grounds Julie, she learns a lot about herself, her friends, her family and most of all cooking. Her laid back lifestyle include all sorts of interesting characters as well as her supportive husband. Julie is extremely down to earth and has a knack for self deprecating humor. I'm guessing that's how she will be played by Amy Adams in the movie.
I predict that Julie and Julia will be a huge hit, after all with Nora Ephron directing and Meryl Streep in a major role, how could it miss?
