Juliette Gordon Low History
Juliette Low was born October 31, 1860, she known affectionately as "Daisy" to her family and friends. Low spend most of her early childhood days in a large Savannah home, which was purchase by the Girl Scouts of the USA in 1953. On December 21, 1886, her parents' 21st wedding anniversary she wedded Williams Mackey Low. Before the wedding Juliette loss hearing in one ear due to improper treatment of a chronic ear infection, after her wedding she loss hearing in her other ear because a grain of rice thrown at the wedding got lodge in her ear. When the doctor tried to remove the grain of rice he ruined her eardrum resulting in total hearing loss in that ear. Juliette Low was volunteering and helping other before the invention of the Girl Scout, she aid in the war efforts during the Spanish-American War. She evened helped her mother organized a convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers returning from Cuba. In later years, Juliette Low met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout and Girl Guides. She instantly became interested in the new youth movement, in less than a year she made her historic phone call to her cousin saying "I've got something for the girls of Savannah, all of America and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight." With that phone call and meeting that followed Girl Scouts was formed.
Juliette Low Birthplace
The Wayne-Gordon Home is Savannah first historic landmark, saved from demolition and restored by Girl Scouts of USA back in 1953. The home had been occupied by many Gordon Family members it was even converted into four apartments in 1942 for patriotic and financial reasons by order of the government. Mark Sheridan the architect who oversaw the conversion, tried to make minimal changes so that the house was easily converted back into a single family home at future date.
The Juliette Low Birthplace home of the Girl Scouts are located in the heart of Savannah downtown; at 10 East Oglethorpe Avenue Savannah, GA. Tours is being lead through the home Mon-Tues, Thurs-Sat. 10 a.m-4 p.m. and Sun 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Closed on Wed.
