Once again the biggest July 4th event in Bowling Green will take place on the campus of Western Kentucky University. The event is held on the South Lawn in front of Guthrie Tower (the giant clock tower). Included at this year's event once again will be the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra and Chamber singers to entertain the crowd before during and after the tremendous fireworks display.

I was lucky enough to have attended last year's gathering at WKU and was pleasantly surprised by both the turnout and the event itself. South Lawn was completely covered by families and their picnic blankets. But that is not the only place where people were eagerly awaiting the fireworks show. There were people standing nearby and tons of people who chose to watch the show from the top of the parking structures across the street from Guthrie Tower.

If you are anything like me, you don't like to be surrounded by big crowds which is what will happen if you decide to sit out on the South Lawn. That's why a few friends and I decided to try the top of one of the parking structures. We grabbed some food from KFC and made our way to the top of the structure in my pickup truck. We ate our food and listened to the great music from the orchestra below among a few other cars atop the structure, but not too many to make us feel claustrophobic. After we ate we set up pillows and blankets in the back of my truck so that we could all lay down and look up at the fireworks display. Needless to say, the experience was awesome. There is nothing like looking up into a dark sky and seeing hundreds and hundreds of fireworks.
Certainly, there is nothing wrong with sitting out on the lawn and watching the display, but up in the parking structure we had so much more space and didn't have hundreds of screaming kids circling around us before the fireworks started.

If you do decide to sit out on the lawn there are plenty of advantages to going down there to enjoy the experience with your friends and/or family. If you get there early enough, you will have plenty of space to let the kids run around for awhile or time to kill by throwing a football around with your friends. And even though I was pretty comfortable in the back of my pickup truck watching the show, I bet that there is nothing like laying in the grass watching the fireworks go off.

So my advice to you is to get out to WKU's Guthrie Tower early so that you can have plenty of time to have fun with your family before the huge crowds start gathering. Also, you don't have to worry about anyone getting hurt using fireworks if you decide to go and watch as the professionals show off the numerous types of fireworks they have.

Once again, the fireworks display will be held at WKU's Guthrie Tower on July 4th. The orchestra will start playing at 7:00 pm and the fireworks display will begin at approximately 8:00 pm. Families are encouraged to get there early so that they can find a reasonable amount of space for their entire family.
