July BO Hits the Big Time

Sets Monthly Record

WEEKEND BO RELEASES
"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" "The Change-up" Notes: July is now the best month ever for BO total, as results are been tallied. Yes, that means, not just for July but any other month as well. As June went out with a lower than expected total, July did not disappoint with a $1.4 billion BO.
That is nothing to sniff at, unless it's bad BO, bit it's not. As August rolls along, now it's time for "The Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Computer-generated apes replace those humans actors (a bad thing) and they do look more realistic but will it take the fun out of the film? You be the judge. Oh, back to the July numbers. It has been reported that 175 million tickets were sold. By the way, "Untitled bin Laden Project" gets a Fall 2012 release date and an "Untitled Star Trek Sequel" will be out June 2012. I'm sensing an untitled theme here. Let's move on. The item I will be tracking is to see what film comes in second after a near dead heat last weekend.
OK, those numbers again. While "Potter" went over $1 billion worldwide, "Transformers" just did, too. Hold on to your ticket stub for this one: three films released this year have passed the $1 billion mark. No sniffing here either. That's boffo BO.
LET'S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE NUMBERS: Some stellar numbers after July box office numbers tallied. Best month ever, not just a July at $1.4 billion; two more films cross $1 billion as 10 now have done so in history. Three of them were released this year alone and tat has never been done before. A staggering feat is that it took "Potter" only 19 days to do that.
Oh, the previous monthly high was also a July (2010) with $1.34 billion. Of the top 10 highest months of all-time, seven are from July. July saw 175 million tickets sold. Not all have been worthy of note like those as, overall, the year-to-date total is down six percent from 2010 and attendance is at the lowest since 1996. SOURCE: Box Office Mojo
